I've had chronic back pain for 5 yrs now. I took morphine 15mg 3x day for 3 yrs. I had sweats, nightmares were horrible. I take percocet 4xday now yet my pain is overpowering it. I don't want morphine again..or least 1xday, n percocet rest of time... I just need relief. I'm not a pill head, this pain feels like my bones r splitting apart. I have osteoarithitis, osteoporosis, 2 herniated discs, pinched nerve, n bone spurs... the Dr tells me no cure... surgery make me worse..what's my best answer?
What stronger pain med can I take with percocet?

I like the way percocet works on my pain..yet it doesn't last. I would like 1 stronger pill to take with these...maybe to help control it better. I take Mobil 15mg, neurontin 300mg4xday, n Xanax 0.05 1xday also...this disease is horrible. I still work...gettin harder everyday.

I also had 3 epidural, the 3rd one 2 weeks apart fro 2nd...didn't touch my pain..made it worse.

My bmd test showed I was at osteoporosis....yet not bad enough. I take Mobil 15mg 1day, neurontin 300mg 4day, percocet 4day, Xanax .05 1day...only take half Xanax most times, sometimes half percocet when not bad...I am scared to keep gettin stronger pain meds. I got off morphine 15mg 3day cause of sweats, nightmares, not to mention it will shut down all of your organs faster than anything...have cousin on first responded helicopter for hospital...he told me to stay away from it if I could. I was so disappointed epidurals didn't work. I work making insulin for diabetic...one day at an old job hurt shoulder....rehab found source...spine!!_ sprained rotation cuff only start of it. Just pray a lot n hope for best. Steadily gotten worse. Dr says no cure, won't even touch herniated disc n neck...may paralyze me. It's c7 n l2 main discs. Had mri, bmd, all the above. Guess sounds like more strong pain med my only answer. Tried antidepressants...made me confused, crazy, dizzy. Pain med don't affect me...least not percocet. Been on em long time..started 5mg roxicet, then moved up...just discouraged!!!

Hey hurtin n need help,
You sound like you need a long acting, continuous release type pain med. There are continuous release morphine medications such as Avinza or MS Contin. If you don't want a morphine sulfate, you might discuss Opana continuous release with the doctor. It is a morphine derivative that is considerably stronger than then the percocet.
Continuous release formulas of the morphine sulfate or oxymorphone (Opana) will mean taking the med twice a day and only using the percocet for break through pain when needed. You would be getting around the clock relief with a controlled amount of medicine being released over time.
Hope this helps,
Laurie

This is my experience only, i have had 4 back surgeries 3 fusions, i have taken every drug from A-Z this has been going on for 15yrs, One yr ago i was put on methadone, and i love it it has a long half life so if u forget a pill it's okay. yes you will become physically dependant, as you would any opiate. Lyrica is also good for pain it's not addictive, i was on that and it worked, but could not handle side effects.
Thanks for advice... I'm dependant on my other meds... not a problem... as long as works..least all these different meds people r telling me gives me hope... I can't handle muscle relaxes, cymbals, zoloft, prozac..they made me crazy n zombiefied. I like to b myself, just work, live... going to grocery store is a struggle most time!! Hips can't take pressure... just jacked up!!
That's what were all here for we give our own life experiences and you take what you can from them, and apply them to your lifestyle.

Since percocet works well for you, you might want to try either the long acting form of oxycodone (the opioid drug in percocet) which is OxyContin or oxycodone alone products (percocet is a combo product with both oxycodone and acetaminophen). Oxycodone (alone) comes in 5mg, 15mg and 30mg. I think the highest dose for the Percocet is 10mg of oxycodone. Taking all that Percocet with high doses of acetamonophen throughout the day is hard on your liver too, so a product that doesnt have acetaminophen is better for chronic pain and so is a long acting formula because you keep better control on your pain. I would recommend you try OxyContin with maybe Percocet or plain oxycodone for breakthrough. Discuss your options with your Dr and ask him about all these options too. Bottom line, the Rx has to come from him! Good Luck! Pain is a hard thing to live with! I truly understand. It takes a bit of trial and error before you find the right combo that works for your pain!
Thanks, I appreciate feedback. Yea, pain is hard to live with. People who don't hurt..think I'm not really hurt n people at work have said crap like that. I went out on medical leave for 6 weeks. I wish they had to feel what I feel for 1month!!! People think if u don't have surgery, u not hurt... how ignorant can they b!!!
That's the one reason i like methadone there is no acetametaphine and does not damage body parts.
Dzoobaby is absolutely right it sometimes takes a while to find out what works for you, more times than not it's like I saw one person write one size does not fit all, and what pain medication that might help one person can be a rough thing for another person, it can take time and making changes in order to find out what works for you, but as I said before I hope whatever it is that you are able to find something that makes things more tolerable for you-
Thanks... I just want to work n live. My hip pain is awful... even bones n my feet hurt after work..I'm 40... disability last option... too many bills. I will talk to Dr., just wanted to know my options... sooo easy for other people to say grin n bear it when they don't know what pain is.

YOU ARE my life story! Since you still work (don't know how you are doing it) it would be hard for you to conentrate depending on what type of work you do of course. Don't want to be running machinery either on stronger meds! First, are you on something for the osteoporosis? If not please get a bone density, & have your doctor evaluate you for a bone building medication. You are taking I believe you meant Mobic for anti-imflammatory for your arthritis. Is this correct? I can't take NSAIDS of any kind because of stomach pain with them, so count your blessings there, but have heard Celebrex is much better, & also have heard others talk about Volteran (sp) Gel that you can rub on where the pain is. In my case I'd just have to order a tub full & soak my whole body, but have heard other say it works very well. I'm not spelling it right I don't think tho'.
I take mobic 15mg (smartphone plugs n words..changes em, too..not too smart!!). I was on lodine 400mg 2day. Wanted to try different to c if it helped. I take, neurontin 300mg 4day, Xanax.05 1day, percocet4day. I've had bmd, mri, blood tests, I c a neurologist at pain mgmt clinic. My osteoporosis is right at line..numbers just over osteopenia... I take a lot of vitamins, glucosamine... try to eat right etc... I hope with everyone's support I can find happy middle n this thing..thanks for advice.
It is hard to concentrate when its real bad... I save my vac time n sick days for that, plus fmla paperwork,too... I work making insulin... I would never put anyone's life n danger... I have to suit up n cleansing septic conduct... I have to b able to function... that's why I can't take muscle relaxers nor antidepressants... made me crazy n drunk!!!

I would think that oxycontin would be something to look at for you. It is time released oxycodone. Then you would probably still be able to take the percocet for breakthrough pain. I had trouble with Morphine too. It caused me to hallucinate and have horrible nightmares just like what you expierienced. Good Luck -Alem
Thanks... I appreciate advice..nightmares were verrrry horrible!!!

My sister in law is on fentanyl patches and they work great for her. She had a calcified vertabrae that she had surgery on last year. Now she uses these patches that last up to three days and they really work great on her.
Is this something workable for you? I think there might be less side effects and more instant relief.
Maybe..I work making insulin, have to gown up n cleansing n classroom... sweat inside suit, not sure... I have to b able to function..the percocet works..just don't last..I can take it n takes pain away yet don't make me feel weird... maybe that patch do same... thanks for help!!!

Hello hurting n need help i can deff. feel where you are coming from. Living in pain is so... bad! It takes all i got to get up in the morning. I hurt so bad it makes me feel bad all over. I have 2 boys that are 3 n 4 it used to take all I had to keep up with them! About a year ago my Dr. put me on Tramadol its 50mg and I take 2 every 4 to 6 hours and it works wornders for me! I love that not only does it take my pain away but, I feel more energy to do things also. I guess it's because i'm free of pain and feel good. I am so blessed to have found this med. and for it to work the way it does for me. Maybe this is something you can talk to you'r Dr. about. I hope this was helpful for ya. STAY STRONG and God BLESS :) XO

Hey tinillejade,
You can go to the following site to locate a doctor in your area:
http://doctor.webmd.com/physician_finder/home.aspx?sponsor=core
Then type in your zipcode, skip the doctor's name and go to doctor specialty drop down window and choose anesthesiologist/ pain management and click search. It will give you a list of pain specialists in your area.
Good luck,
Laurie
I go to pain management clinic, neurology specialist.
Dear Hurtin n need help,
Have you considered Duragesic? It's a controlled-release patch you change every 24-36 hrs for pain. Of course, if you already see a pain management specialist, maybe you've heard of it. Possibly could be used as an adjunctive to your current regimen. Thought it might be worth a try.
Good luck & hang in there,
Jill
