I was having a lot of stomach trouble when I started useing the 40MG Opana ER. I used it for almost a year and when I read your site about how Opana was making other people have stomach problems as well I just stopped taking it and my stomach problems stopped. I now have regular bowl movments and my appatite has returned. So it had to be the Opana! What can I recomend to my Doctor to replace the Opana 40MG tabs? I can say they did help with the pain but it wasn't worth trading one pain for another. I still have to deal with a lot of pain so I need something that's just as powerful as the Opana 40MG, I just need to replace it with something just as strong. My e-mail address is r0005@aol.com and I look forward to hearing your suggestion's, Thank you!
Sincerely,
Richard Woods

It may not be suitable for you, but perhaps a stomach relief medicine to allow you to continue with the Opana ER.

reallywishiwasdead? There's help for you!! Don't be so discouraged! Ask your doc about ms contin. I think the 60mg is about equal to the opana 40mg. They're basically the same; slow released morphine. It's also less costly compared to many of the long lasting pain meds. Once your pain is under control, you should have a better outlook on things. Keep your chin up!
Best wishes,
chris

Simple answer is DILAUDID... It is not long acting - highest dosage is 8 mgs. BUT it is 1:1 w/Opana ER. Regular Opana works 4-6 hours, but has a Long Half Life - 7-9 hrs. I assume you are taking 20 mgs/Opana ER 2x/day - every 12 hours. You can do the math... There WAS a long acting Dilaudid - but people abused it-crushing, smoking it-whatever the hell they did-ended up dead and so they pulled it. The Opana's are only available in Brand and there is NO OTHER "PERFECT" SUBSTITUTE OR GENERIC AT THIS TIME!

While people complain about "stomach" problems, I have to ask if they are following the GOLDEN RULE - NO FOOD! (even Vitamins - especially Calcium can influence the efficacy of ANY drug and should NEVER be taken w/Opana ER or Opana). Now if your Doc says certain meds can be taken w/Opana, I'd still call the hotline-opana.com. I know what I've experienced t/o the years and I've taken Opana ER & Opana w/i a year of its release (over 5 yrs.) and the only times I've ever experienced "stomach" problems - was due to FOOD. Opana ER MUST be taken on an empty stomach - with a glass of WATER, then food, after waiting at least 1 hour after taking it "or" take it 2-3 hours AFTER A MEAL. Again, since I've walked these waters for years, I never take it with any other meds, vitamins, OTC drugs, etc. If you have slow digestion/metabolism-or a had a big meal-wait a little longer than 2-3 hrs. I take my ER's at 6AM and 6PM - that way I can take my vitamins after breakfast, Calcium w/Lunch, etc. ALSO, if you take other meds w/Opana, that can cause "stomach" problems and/or lower the efficacy...
OPTION 2: Oxycontin..1:2 w/Opana ER..Meaning you'd have to take 80 mgs. of Oxy. Most docs prescribe Oxy every 8 hrs. because Oxy doesn't last 12 hours. For me, it had too many side effects - tried it twice - Opana was my last option. Thank God I get most med journals & Med. Assoc. articles & I got on it almost as soon as it was released. My Doc told me that the other patients "didn't like it" - my opinion is that w/Opana you don't get a BUZZ - and it's a letdown for most. ME, I just want OUT OF PAIN!
Hope this helps... If you need more info, most can be found on this site!
Wish You Well (and I'm going to change my userid... was feeling rather "gloomy"... I was on an SSRI - stopped taking it all at once (I DO NOT RECOMMEND) and am NO longer "FeelingBadandSad"!!! AND I CAN THINK AGAIN !!!

Simple answer to this isn't the 8mg Dilaudid, that's is the old form of 'Hydromorphone', it is still available and used in the hospitals. The new drug that is available that is very close in comparing Opana ER for is called Exalgo ER. This is very similiar as to a long acting narcotic analgesic. It works in the brain to change how your body feels and responds to pain. You also as you know must be opiate tolerate just like Opana to be prescribed a medication such as these 2 medications. The Exalgo ER, Like the Opana ER also is available in a IR also for break-thru pain as well. The diffrerent strengths of Exalgo ER, are 12mg, 16mg, I believe that I read somewhere that they are either have a 32mg ER, or its in the works to be released. I do know Exalgo IR, which is for break-thru is a 8mg. I hope this helps because if your on Opana ER 40mg like myself,,you wouldn't even feel a dilaudid!! That's for sure...

I would not say Dilauded is a replacement because I take 40mg of Opana WITH 4mg of dilauded daily. I was on Fentynol patches 75microg every 48 hours because my body was absorbing the medication too quickly for the 72 hours and i was getting withdrawls from it and when i went to 100 i was stoned out of my mind and could not function, i was falling asleep driving. Opana works ok for me, thank god no side effects but i still have more pain then when i was on the patches, maybe you should look in the the patches, some people tolerate it well, and like others you have to have been on an opiate for a reasonable amount of time before using it... good luck.

I haven't seen an answer for this question well an answer I feel is going to work. I have been on Opana Er 40mg 3 times a day for over a year n I recently went back down to 30mg 3 times for 2 weeks n now on 2 a day for next 7 n I am sick n the pain is getting worse by the minute.Only reason I am sitting up now is to find out what is going on. A friend was n pharmacy n overheard employees talking about they are out of Opana n blah blah WHAT !@##$$ AM I GOING TO GO THROUGH NOW. I finally found something to control most of my pain n now they are gone. Which I do remember ready on this website they would replace the new Opana all at once but for patients not to have any available. What is happening? I am suffering severe withdraws now let alone none at all n they don't seem to be getting better although I prepared myself for this there isn't enough preparation. IDK I am sick n that doesn't help my pain levels.

I feel what suicidal thoughts feel like now more than ever n that is due to the pain i endure daily n I get to feeling better n now this. What can help? I would love to be prepared n terribly sorry for anyone going through similar situations do not want to imagine worse. Very sorry n b praying for you.
Is there a best way then blunt coming out with it to your dr what you think would help with your pain. Like a little this n little that I do know what is going on best n I am very honest but with all the problems with pain med seekers just for fun ruins it for us. I hope we hear some good news!!!
I will keep you all n my prayers.

They say, Walgreen's, and others that they have no idea when the Opana will actually be available. My wife is on way more opana than you and her Dr. had no choice but to put her on Exalgo IR16,4 pills every 24 hours plus dilaudid 4mg. She started today and is saying it is rough on her. She feels she is not getting the relief she needs but I told her to give it time to change over in her body. I hope you have good insureance. Retail cost is around $80 per pill on the Exalgo. We all know the insurance company will be paying less. How much ? Who knows. The cost will come way down as more of it is produced. I am hopeing that the Exalgo will be a great replacement but only time will tell.

Simple: 10mg of Oxymorphone is equal to 20mg of Oxycodone

Hi Richard, I recently started taking Opana ER, the only substitute that will help you but won't give you stomach problems is Oxycontin ER. I was taking Oxycontin 40mg tablets. I was taking 160 mg. Per day for 10 years.I had no problems with this medication, it was perfect for my back pain and rhuematoid arthritis. I was recently given Opana ER only because I was losing my Health Insurance. My doctor tried to find me a medication that I would be able to afford when my insurance ran out and Opana ER was the closet medication that was comparable to the oxycontin. The price for Opana or Oxycontin without having Insurance is $1300.00 !! Unbelievable. I can't afford that. At any rate, I always eat something before I take any meds even though the script tells you to take on an empty stomach.Check with your MD. Good Luck to you, if you know any place that will help me pay for my meds. let me know.
Best Regards
Naydeen

i been taking apana for one month and already been to the hospital three times for stomach problems and i only take 5mg 3x daily could this be my problem
I cannot confirm/deny stomach problems either way. But I do/have been taking pepcid ac from taking a varity of pills. I have not found anything as effective as opana 40 mg er. But I too am looking for a replacement. Something that equals 120 mg dose I take 3 times daily. If at all possiable, having the replacement be crushable for a feeding tube. Another question to add is why the need to wait 1 hour for food befor and after taking the meds... Does it effect the effectiveness of med, length it lasts, what? Please fill me in asap... Going for surgery in 2 weeks and I desperatly need to know... TY ALL
I have been on 60 mg 2X day for 7 yrs and prior to that i have been on so many other pain medications. Opana is the best pain med for Chronic Pain I have found out there, Unfortunately anytime you take ANY pain medication one of the side effects is some stomach discomfort. The stomach problems are usually do to that pain medications make your bowels move slower.
So to help with constipation it is important to either eat ALOT of Fiber. Or you can take fiber supplements. Also what has helped me the most is taking a Pro Biotic that you can buy over the counter. The ProBiotics help with your digestion system with constipation, gas, naseau. The benifits of the ProBiotics are actually good for anyone.

Also I am not sure how long you have been taking the Opana but if you just started this medication you will find out over a few months the pain is not as severe. But please DO NOT CRUSH Opana as this will actually make you Over Dose due to this med is to be released over several hours. If you crush the tablets I know from having this happen to someone I knew it can Kill you.
I hope this helps out.
All narcotic's can cause GI (stomach) problems they can keep your stomach from emptying like it should. It can also cause constipation in which case I suggest taking stool softeners, miralax or something for constipation. Ask your dr., but you shouldn't take a laxative for a long period. Long use of laxitives can cause your bowels to become lazy and not work properally. If your Opana works for your pain talk to your dr. about these suggestions. Also is your stomach doesn't empty like it should you can try Reglan Reglan causes your food to empty correctlly again ask your dr.
