What other drug would substitute for depakote er since I have to switch treating bipolar 1 disorder?

Have you tried Lithium or Lamictal? Both are usually first-line mood stabilizers. Others are Equetro (carbamazepine) are Trileptal. You should definitely consult your doctor about which would be best for you.
