I have been taking nifedipine 20mg. for hypertension, but can't stand the headaches that comes with it. Is there a better medication with little or no side effects?:

The list of available antihypertensives is very, very long and they are specific to you. Beta blockers often cause more side effects. aacalcium channell blockers often do not. First you have to narrow down the specific type you and your doctor think you may need, then lok at a good M.D. or nursing drug guide for info. Don't rely on the internet for having a really complete over all view of a specific drug or condition. The bookstore has Nursing Drug Guide books. Maybe the library too. Lastly, changing the dose can sometimes solve the problem, especially with cardiac drugs. You are taking an antianginal which is used for other conditions besides high blood pressure. First find out why, then go from there. It comes in 10mg short actig and in extended release tablets, which may reduce the side effects.This drug you are on does cause headaches and is commonly given to patients with angina or a cardiac history. It reacts with Ginko, Ginseng, St. Johns Wort and grape fruit juice too.Good luck! TW

Hi,
First of all I would like to remind you that the side effect may different to each person. I used nifedipine 20mg before and yup it takes me three days to adapt with it. So if your BP is decreasing and the med goes well i suggest you to stick on it because the side effect will never stand long. But if it don't you may try amlodipine. I have changed to amlodipine and thanks God it works better with no side effect. It is better to ask your doc because he know you well then me. ;)

Azor was the best I ever took.. I had side effects for about 2 days , then I felt AWSOME! That stuff seemed to even help my depression, and other issues I had..just so expensive..I am on Lisinipril with Ampolodine now, and no side effects, just doesnt work very well
