I was wondering what is more powerful, 20mg oxycontin or 15mg MS contin. I have been prescribed to both in the past.

20mg of OxyContin is stronger; however, the first answers' calculation is wrong. OxyContin is only 1.5 times stronger, not 3 times. To get the equivalent amounts, just take the amount of miligrams of Morphine you want calculated, and divide it by 1.5 to get the amount of miligrams of OxyContin it is equivalent to. Example= 60 mg of Morphine is equivalent to 40mg of an Oxy.
Or, from your question, your 20mg OxyContin would be equivalent to a 30mg MS Contin.

I just switches from 40 mG of oxycodone to 60 mG of morphine per Doctors
suggestion, so apparently the oxycodone is stronger than the morphine.However I think the morphine is a smoother drug than oxycodone.I get the jitters at the end of the day and a headache using oxycodone, I hope I don't using the morphine. So morphine is two thirds as strong as oxycodone because I didn't increase my perscription , just switched straight across the board.

Maybe for you it is, but Not for me I tried that Drug and it did Nothing I take 120mgs of Morphine a Day and Now that's Not working like it did so I tryed Oxycontin 30mgs 4 times a day that Drug felt like I took Tylenol which does Nothing I was only supposed to take two a Day, but that was ludacris so I had to try the four and still it did Nothing There must be something out there that can Help with my Back and Neck Pain, because Now even the Morphine doesn't work anymore. Any Ideas?

I don't the know actual 1-1 strength comparison but there is something called bio availability which means how well\much are absorbed into your system when taken orally. I think Oxycodone (Oxycontin's active) and Morphine are roughly equivalent but Oxycontin has far better bio availability therefore is more effective mg for mg per dose. For having 10 consecutive surgeries on the hip implant from hell I've had both and can say that 15mg of oxycodone IR requires 30mg or morphine sulfate IR to get roughly the same relief. While I never had the Time release version of the Morphine, I've read that it takes nearly 2x mg to equal a given Oxycontin dose for the same level of pain relief. But everyone is different and sometimes your Dr or Pain specialist will have to try a few different things to find what is best for you. Hope this helps

PLAIN AND SIMPLE!!! Oxycontin contains both morphine and codine (very pwerful in itself. MS contin Just the Morphine less than 1/2 strenght 100mg ms contin would have similar but not as enjoyable and intennse effeccts of a 40mg oxycontin and they would both be worth about 20 each on the street but oxy definitely in higher demand. i have 100 60mg mscontin im about to just toss em...

I was prescribed 30 mg MS Contin and I didn't like it at all. It made me tired and I felt that it was too strong, it just seemed to knock me out. I took the entire bottle to my Dr. so she would write a different script. She then gave me 20mg of Oxycontin which is much more agreeable with my system. It doesn't knock me out or make me as tired as the MScontin. This isn't really a technical answer but my point here is make sure your meds agree with you and go back to your Dr. if you want to try different meds. Everyone reacts to meds differently, make sure yours are right for you. Take care.

As with what was already said, I found Oxcycontin to be twice as strong as MS contin, the Morphine Sulf. After quite some time of being on 30mg of Oxycontin, due to the pain from neuropathy, I had to change medications. I beleived the only time released medication was the oxycontin but found out by mistake about the Morphine, MS contin, was also a time released pill.Oxycontin worked well to help subside the pain, but also was depleating my wallet. I spoke with my doctor and we tryed a straight over switch to 30mg of Morphine Sulf. For me, I knew after about 2 hours, that a straight switch 30mg of each was not working. I had to do something to help more with the pain, so I tryed taking 2, 30mg. pills. To my surprise 60 mg. of the Morphine had the approximate same effect as 30mg. of Oxycontin. I went back to my doctor and had him change my medication to the 60mg.

i was on 2x80mgs oxycontin a day i asked the doc to lower my dosage to 3x60mg a day so it would last the entire day well he did but the insurance wouldnt cover it until he tried other meds so he put me on 30mgs of mscontin2x a day n it did nothing for me at all now he raised it to 100mgs a day and that dosent work any suggestions on why 200mgs are doin nothing 4 relief of pain in why not just put me on what i was taken atleast i had a relief from pain?

I got lucky 10 yrs ago,but it's coning to an end cant find any Medicare plans that cover it in the gap. You have to find a doctor that understands pain meds. My Doc now gives them to me cause I was on them already, but when I broke a couple of ribs he would not give me anything. My pain-mgt. doc would have given me some IR 30mg oxys or morphine. It may take a few doc's but you can find one that will give you what you want(its what works for you) good luck

I have taken both oxycontin and ms contin, right now i am on 300 mg ms contin daily& 4 mg of diladid 3 times daily for break through pain and have found that oxycontin worked much better, but i had very bad side effects such as very tired and confusion, but it really does depend on the person. I have been on some type of pain meds for over 10 years, right now nothing really works unless I go to hospital for shot of diladid but can't do that every day. I have been told by doc. oxycontin is stronger than ms contin.

Everyone is different however.I like the oxycontin better for me, Theres definetly a different affect as when I took ms contin it was 60mgs and I assure you I would rather have the 20mgs ocs than 60mgs ms anyday of the week. I know the scientific properties of oxycontin is cobra venom and I also know they just came out with a new medicene called cobroxin over the counter med inexpensive and is said to be 600 times more potenant than morphine hope this helped and remember I am a addict! I would be real careful with oxycontin Its a very cunning drug to say the very least and a drug of mass destuction in everyway! always remember" you cant miss what you aint had " also just in case you dont know the "ms" in ms contin stands for morphine sulphate.god bless

Quick Story; I was on Methadone for a very long Time(over 20yrs)and found out I had a problem with an irregular Heartbeat that was the cause (i disagree,but)anyway I was put on Morphine 30 Mg's 4 times a day It did Help for awhile but after about a year it stopped I have a Very bad Back and Neck problem and Now that doesn't even take away the Pain anymore, Now they want me to try Oxycontin 30 Mg's, but only 30 Mg's twice a day(not 4) I haven't tried them yet so what I would like to know is even if I take the Oxys 2 times a day all that's going to do if Nothing as did twice the dose of Morphine So Will it be better then taking the M.S 4 X a Day or Oxys only 2x a day I'm Lost so a Little Help Please, if anyone Has or knows a solution I would appreciate your Help Thank You Gabriel

I am currently taking 10 mg of Oxycontin myself and 5mg/325mg of Hydrocodone (Norco, as it's properly called... Vicodin with less acetaminophen). Originally, about a year ago, I started off with 15mg of MS Contin but it made me feel a bit nauseous. My doctor then switched me to the current dose I mentioned. However, as of the first of the month, I am without health insurance. Unfortunately, I cannot stop taking these meds not only due to the fact that I am in severe pain (abdominal and of unknown origin... polyps but docs not sure it's that reason), but also because I am dependent.

Oxycontin has no generic. The med you got was more than likely OP (Oxycontin Perdue) OC (Oxycodone Continuous) are both manufactured by Perdue Pharma who holds the patent for several more years. OP is the reformulated version of OC. They changed it in order to prevent abusing the med. It's impossible to crush and if you try to inject it, it turns in to a gel like substance. They no longer manufacture OC's.

One sugestion for you my friend ask for some Phenogren for the nausea its very cheap and works great, 25mg tabs and they help for sleep too. I use them for the Morphine and I take it 10 mins before the morphine and Im fine. Also another not so expensive med is Oxycodone 5-30mg tabs thats the same as whats in Oxycontin, if that works for you. Morphine is stronger by med statistics its the highest next to Diladid but does not offer a euphoria feeling that some get use to. Well just a suggestion and good luck!

i have been on everything from tylenol 3's to fentanyl, including dilaudid, mscontin, oxycontin and opana.. i rthink that taking any one of these drugs over a long period of time reduces their affectiveness.. but i am now switching back to oxycontin 40 mgs from 60 mgs mscontin. i found that mscontin was not a reliable pain reliever for me and i remember feeling better on oxycontin. i am also on roxicodone for breakthrough pain 60mgs 3x a day..along with oxycontin 40mgs 2x a day..i am hoping that i will find more relief. everyone is different and you have to figure out for yourself what will work better for you..just remember that if you are in severe pain , nothing will make it go away. you have to learn to live with a certain amount of pain and adjust to it..but these drugs can take the edge off and allow you to function.i do believe that oxy vs ms, oxy will come out on top.

I am currently taking 30mg MS Contin for Pain from Hip Replacement Surgery, I have and am taking Percocet 10/325 for a broken hand, and have run out of the MSContin, I have been given 4 10 mg Percocet daily.
Because of my tolerance I dont feel the percocet even when taking 4 at one time, however in my case the MSContin 30 mg is better than 30mg of the Oxycodone as it lasts like 8 hours or a little more while the Oxycodone dosen't last longer than 5 hours.Today I took 30mgMSContin and 2 10mg Percocet, they are different so they Both help the pain but it seems in different ways, I dont feel and euphoria but the pain has been relieved better than with one or the other. In my opinion, the MS Contin is not quite as strong as the same MG of oxycodone, but being it lasts longer and cost so much less, like $1 for a 30mg MS Contin as to over $2 per 10mg Percocet

I don't know if I should even say this, but I am going to anyway I have found that the Best Pain Relief Meds atr Not Morphine, or even oxycontin Yes they work for a little while but Not for long Eventually you are going to need more, It might take a while, but Believe Me you will Need More Now if you want to taake something that will releave the Pain and even Mask it I was on Methadone for over 30 Yrs and Never even Knew I had a Severe Back Problem it really did Mask the Problem and Pain Plus the half life is to say the least Much Much longer then anything on the Market today when it comes to releaving Pain and Not wakeing up Drug Sick, Methadone by Far is the Better Drug I should Know I was on it for over 30 yrs like I said, but There is One and Only one Drawback,if you will It Will Take Away Some Emotions, but if You can Live with that and you want to be Pain Free and be able to Live a Normal Live Then Please Concider Switching I Promise you will Not Regreat doing so,

Methadone is a good pain reliver but read up on it and see how it stays in the system different than true opis, and then see if you want to take it. I was on it for 5 years and then when I read up on it I got off it and the detox was the worst in my life, and that was even with taking another opiod. It is great for the money though!

First off before I answer your question billy2 I want you to understand if your abusing this medication or if your taking pain medications to get high I strongly encourage you to stop and receive help due to the danger of it and because it's illegal as well as stupid. As for your question I could assure you MS Contin is way more stronger than Oxycontin and few people know this which is better since Oxycontin is the choice it seems for addicts. Oxycontin is Oxycodone without the Acetaminophen but with the strength or equivalent of the number of Oxycodones combined in a slow released tablet/pill. I know because I've taken every pain medicine you could think of due to a lower back injury that required surgery and life long existing problems. I could say my current prescriptions are helping me a lot than the prescriptions from the past.

you seem to understand these meds quite well. Maybe you can give me some answers. I currently am on pain meds due to severe pain of the pancreas and liver, and biliary system due to complications from bypass surgery. I currently am taking morphine sulf ER 100mg 2x a day and morphine sulf 30mg as needed every 4 hrs. I have been on this dosage for quite awhile. Now it seems like the 30mg is like taking nothing. I have been taking more as I need it but then my scripe runs out before my next Dr. appt. What else can I be taking to stop the pain? I hate relying on pain pills but have no choice until they can get me fixed if ever.

Right on the money for most of this, if you are using a drug to get high, you are not using it for pain. Seek help! Might as well smoke a bowl.Oxycontin is very close to the strenght os MS Contin but is WAY stronger than Oxycodine/Oxcycodone whether it be the 5, 7.5, or 10's, or any others.Oxcycodine is NOT a time released tablet. Yes, I have taken them all unfortunalty, even Gabapentin 600mg 2 pills 2 x daily, and wish I didn't have to. I was a drug/alcohol counselor for many years and it horifies me I have to use them. As far as nausia, asked ealier by someone else, maybe look into Promethazine, the trade off is it does make you tired also. But again, not to upset anyone but PLEASE ask many Doctors who specialize in this. Don't put your life in just one's hands, and again, I agree with most of it.

The person saying the 1.5 answer is correct.However the ms contin is much better for controling back pain.I take both the ms contin 60 mg 3x per day and the oxycodone 30 mg 3x per day for breakthrough.I use to take the oxycodone and oxycontin 30 mg but the oxycontin was way to $$$.However i am glad i switched because the morphine works better on the back pain.When i done some research i found that the studies confirm that people with severe back pain have better results with morphine because of the resepters they work on.But since i have switched the oxycodone seems to cause me headaches and i may ask to have them switched to a morphine product even if its a lesser mg.The only problem is the docs aways have a problem with the patient asking for a certian drug over another due to addiction.Hope this helps

For Back pain the ms con-tin works better than oxy con-tin, ms con-tin with oxycodone for break through pain is OK, Dilaudid is better for breakthrough. neither worked well for my migraine headaches. I used to have them all the time and I mean all the time. Believe it or not after taking everything from ergo-stat to Demerol nothing seamed to work... until I got a divorce,seemed like stress brought them on! It only took ten years of constant pain to figure it out.After she left the headaches went away,haven't had one in almost 30 years that Motrin won't cure.Sad but very true.

This coment is for eddjames.I also have the migranes alot of mine i think due to the herniated disc in my neck,but none of the meds worked to relieve them for me either.I also developed TMJ from nerve problems from the herniations and the meds leave a high percentage of that pain also.Even on the meds i have alot of pain but atleast it takes the pain from a 8 or 9 to a 4 to 6.

Gabriel: Have you tried Methadone? I started on methadone. was on it for 2 yrs b4 it started making me sick. docs then switched me to morphine 30mg 4x a day. with the methadone i think i was taking 10mg 4x day (i think, it was a few yrs ago). it can be a big rough, but it worked better than the morphine. side effects are a bit worse though, and its very hard to stay awake on methadone. i needed a nap or two throughout the day to function but it really knocked out the pain.

Gabriel: I dont know where you live at, but is medical marijuana an option? i dont know much about it, but i hear its effective... if youre lucky enough to live in a state that allows it. Heck, if i was in your position, id probably try it even if it wasnt legal in my state. (im not 'pro' marijuana and dont condone it for recreational use... just wanted to get that out there)

whether thats an option or not, it sounds like its time to switch doctors. it took my a handful of docs before i found someone who cares enough to help me with my pain. other docs would throw weak pain pills my way for a few months then complain when i called for a refill. its like they thought their pain pills would cure me o something. its sad and frustrating, but if your doc isnt helping you anymore and your suffering (YES, SUFFERING. THATS WHAT IT IS. I SUFFERED FOR YRS BEFORE I FOUND A DOC WHO CARED AND CONFIRMED WHAT WAS CAUSING MY PAIN. HURTING/PAIN IS ONE THING, BUT WHEN A PERSON IS SUFFERING LIKE YOU ARE AND I WAS BACK THEN... WELL THE NORMAL RULES SHOULD NOT APPLY) then you need to find another doc. find a way, doc after doc after doc... dont stop, eventually one will help you. I'm a PA-C and know factually, 20mg Oxycontin is more powerful then 15mg Morphine Sulfate. If taken properly that is.
Gabriel, I have been prescribed Ms contin, norco and other types of rx pain killers and still find INGESTING Hash still seems to work better.. plus I sleep like never before in my life. The narcotics tend to lighten my sleep while the hash, when specifically taken by ingestion aids not only in numbing the pain but it also has had an overall calming effect on me. If you live in a state that has approved MMJ then I highly recommend you obtain a doctors recommendation and begin learning how to bake with hash.. not marijuana but hash. Best of luck to you.

I don't know about it being stronger. I have been on 5mg percocet for about a year, my doc recently put me on ms contin 15mg, but i had to go back on the perks cause the morphine barely controlled my pain.
MS Contin is a joke, a 5mg percocet helps me more than 30mg of ms contin. I have been on ms contin for more than 5 yrs but my pain specialist won't prescribe anything else, every now and then he'll give me 5mg percocet for breakthough pain but not very often. What little pain relief I get from ms contin only lasts a few hours not 12 as prescribed

when my dr did my mri it was like what meds do you want. i like the oxy 80 x 2 and oxycodone 15 5xday, he said no problem. i do not want to be in pain, they do take away the pain, i have cervical stenosis spinal canal is 3mm at c-2 c-3 c3- c5, and c5 disc has bent my spinal cord it looks like spagetti! i am in misery if i run out of meds, like suicidal pain, i want to die when it starts hurting, but i can not control the meds, i do not know what to do
to oxyaaron,Yes of course 15 mg of morphine is stronger then 5 mg of oxy.15mg of morphine would =10mg of oxy.Again oxy is 1.5 x's stronger then morphine.But everyone has a differant reaction to how the meds will work for them.Since my last comment i had my meds changed back to the original script.Im finding that if possible you should have your pain meds switched every few months to help prevent tolerance.Depending on what you switch them to it may help with withdrawals when the time comes to stop the meds.Anyone takeing strong pain killers for a long period of time WILL suffer from withdrawals when stopped.Withdrawal doesnt meen your an addict just that your body becomes use to the meds and will not like when you stop takeing them.Everyone should keep that in mind when useing pain meds.For me the pros outweigh the cons.I will be on meds for the rest of my life and without them i couldnt function due to the pain.But it should always be your last choice if possible due to the addiction factor.
I take 260mg. mscontin per day and I was taking 8 mg. of dilaudid 5 times per day. My new doctor took me off of the dilaudid and gave me 15mg of oxycodone instead. I loved the dilaudid because I had no side effects and felt great. I don't like the oxycodone very much... I had bad side effects. Is oxycodone in the codiene family? I am allergic to codiene. Also, is the morphine stronger than oxycodone? Or is the oxycodone stronger than morphine? I need to know..I have to go back to the new doc today. I don't understand why she took me off of the dilaudid... what's the problem??

All I can say is that I have been prescribed Morpine @15mg and I got better relief from Oxycodone 15mg IR. I thought Morphine was gonna be better than Oxycodone 15mg IR. I honestly believe that administering Morphine intraveiniously is more effective than pill form. In pill form I believe that Oxycodone 15mg IR is much stronger and better than Morphine, in my case anyways. As well, Morphine for me really doesn't work that well. However, I have never had Morphine through an IV drip
I was perscribed to take 6 of the 80mg. Tablets per day of oxycontin 480mgs. Now I,m on 600 mgs. of ms. contin per day. I am very famulir with both oxycontin is definility 1.5 times stronger.
