Dobutrex is used for increasing cardiac output in the short term treatment of cardiac decompensation following and MI (heart attack) or cardiac surgeries. Basically it is helping the heart to function better. Morphine is for pain and sedation. Lasix is helping to clear any extra fluid from building up around the heart or lungs. Dopamine is often used side by side with Dobutrex. Hope this helps!

All that I can add is to be in agreement with dzoo... u have a right to know everything with your husband... does the sister have HPPA cleared? Make a list before talking with the doctors so you will remember to ask everything that concerns you. Physicians USUALLY make rounds twice a day in the ICU's... early in the morning (usually) and after office hrs. in the afternoon.
The nurses can also tell u what time each doc makes rounds... so that u can catch them... good luck and I will keep your husband in my prayers...

One further question? my Husband is not sudated with morphine only but with dormicum. I read on the net that hey use this for Palliative Sedation, for distress in the dying/of dying patient, but do not shorten the patient's life? Continuous deep sedation? My Husband has been sudated for 13 days! No reaction, no movement at all. His blood pressure is now 60/50? What does this mean?
It can be used for sedation. Is he on respiratory support? Are they breathing for him? Sometimes they will sedate someone if they are on respiratory support just because it is easier on the patient if they are sedated. They may also sedate just to give the patient time to rest and recover after a very taxing medical emergency. The emergency is very hard on the body so this allows their body to completely rest and attend to only recovering from the medical issue. Is he putting out urine or are his kidney failing? You do have a right to know what is going on with your husband. The Dr should be available for you to ask questions. You should insist on knowing what is going on. Is there a reason that your sister is more involved in his care than you? I'm a little confused that your question seems to convey that your sister may know more than you do about what is going on. You are the wife, no? Is there a reason they are not letting you in on all the details?
Now that I read your question again you refer to the hospital sister. Do you mean the hospital, sister and Dr, or by hospital sister you mean a nun who is a nurse? Again, you have a right to know what is going on, Kathleen. You are his wife and you need to insist on answers. I'm not sure what country you are in but here in the States Drs have to inform the family on what is going on and what their next plan of action is. I had to look up Dormicum-we call it something else here is the States so I wasnt familiar with the term. It is used for sedation and it also has an amnesic effect so the person under the sedation will not remember the time they were sedated and a little after the sedation lifts. He may be quite confused about things for a day or two after he comes out so dont be upset if this occurs-it is just the medicine.

We use it here for conscious sedation where the person is awake and resposive for a procedure but will have no memory of the procedure afterwards even though they were awake and seemingly alert during the procedure. We use it a lot for patients who are being scoped like a colonoscopy or endoscopy. Your husband is under much deeper sedation. His blood pressure is rather low but it can go low when they are sedated, especially deep sedation. One important indicator is if he is putting out much urine. If his kidneys are shutting down then his situation may be pretty grave. The kidneys are one of the first systems to shut down when someone is in danger of death. If he has a urinary catheter and he is putting out good quantities of urine that is good as it means his kidneys are functioning well. You may ask me any questions you wish and I will answer them to the best of my ability but you should really insist on answers from his doctor and other caregivers. Much of what I'm saying is speculation on the information you have given me.
