What if I wanted to switch to trofranil instead of tofranil-PM because of the cost

I have been on tofranil-pm for years and it has been very effective. As I look towards going on medicare and what is paid and what you have to pay out of pocket when you hit the gap, I wondered about switching to toframil since it has a generic form and tofranil-pm does not. It would cost me a lot less money.
Are the two drugs, tofranil-pm and tofranil equivent in their effect.

Tofranil is Imipramine hydrochloride.
Tofranil PM is available as imipramine pamoate. The 75-, 100-, 125-, and 150-mg capsules contain imipramine pamoate equivalent to 75, 100, 125, and 150 mg of imipramine hydrochloride.
Tofranil and Tofranil PM just contain different salts of the drug imipramine.

Try the Tofranil since it is cheaper and see what sort of effects you get. It should give you the same outcome.
