VICODIN HP® contains more hydrocodone (a narcotic analgesic) which is more potent than acetaminophen. VICODIN ES® contains more acetaminophen. The maximum dosage of acetaminophen should not exceed 4000 mg daily which is why the maximum daily dosages for Vicodin HP and Vicodin ES are different.
VICODIN HP® (Abbott)
hydrocodone bitartrate 10 mg and acetaminophen 660mg tablets
The usual adult dosage is one tablet every four to six hours as needed for pain. The total daily dosage should not exceed 6 tablets.

Actually with any narcotic over 5mg. you really shouldn't exceed more than 3 a day or you risk physical addiction and that aint nothing nice to get over. Be careful out there
