Two years ago I had two heart attacks and a stroke. My Dr. installed a stent into my LAD when it closed 100% on the cath lab table. He told me to take Plavix for the rest of my life but I am no longer able to get it from the Veterans Administration. They want to substitute Persantine/aspirin. What is the difference in these two drugs other than Plavix being a newer drug?

Plavix is licensed to prevent blood clots from forming after having a heart attack, stroke, or chest pain that required hospitalization. It also works to prevent clots in people with very poor circulation, such as those who have peripheral artery disease (PAD). Preventing blood clots from forming and blocking blood vessels helps reduce the risk of having another related heart attack or stroke.
Persantine (dipyridamole USP) tablets are indicated as an adjunct to coumarin anticoagulants in the prevention of postoperative thromboembolic complications of cardiac valve replacement.
Aspirin acts to thin the blood and lessen the size of a blood clot during a heart attack.
Usually Plavix & maybe Aspirin is recommended after placing stents in the heart valves, I have been taking this combination now for over 2 years, is supposed to be a wonder med to prevent blood clots. Perhaps it would be a good idea to talk to the manufacturer for a program, the drug is being manufactured by: Bristol-Myers Squibb/Sanofi Pharmaceuticals Partnership, Bridgewater, NJ 08807
