Well the active drug is still the same, so there won't be a big difference in the side effects, the difference is that the XR is a sustained release, so you take it once a day and it lasts all day.
When you take the regular Adderall it is an instant release, so you get the whole dose at once and it only lasts a few hours in your body system, the XR is slowly released for hours, so you are getting a regular amount of the drug for the whole day.
This sometimes requires a dosage adjustment, if you are taking say 25mgs of regular Adderall, you might need 50mgs of the XR because less is released in your body at once, so the doc has to play around a bit to convert the dose and get the most effective amount of medication into your system.

What I have learned is the adderall xr is extended release dose..only need to take 1 pill in the morning which lasts all day. The regular adderall is immediate release and you typically have to take 2 pills a day..one in the morning & another around lunch time. I am fairly new to taking this medication..my first month the Dr prescribed the immediate release Adderall 2 pill a day..10mg each. I really liked this right from the first day. I went to work & hit the ground running!! Same side effects everyone else talked about..dry mouth, decreased appetite, slightly rapid heartbeat at times. Now I'm starting the 2nd month & my Dr. switched my to the Adderall XR. Not liking it so far. I feels nausiated all day. Headache off & on. I dont feel the extra energy at all. In fact I get sleepy in the middle of the day! I havent been able to work out or exercise because I feel so crappy all day..the nausea feeling is horrible.

I've never actually vomitted but it always feels like I could. Plus side is that the Adderall xr name brand was only $40.00 and I paid $200.00 for the Adderall immediate release. Big difference but honestly unless the sick feeling dissipates I would rather spend the $200.00 and feel fantastic. Wondering if anyone else has felt nausiated on the Adderral XR? I think I will just continue the rest of the month & see what happens..unless I can get my dr to change the presription in the middle of the month? She's pretty tough so she'll probably make me wait until my next appt...

i am more tired now than ever. i was on adderall then switch to the e.r. 120 m.g. a day and i can barely keep my eyes open. i am taking nuvigil to help me out in times of need because i only have 10 of the 30 m.g. adderall and those quit working that is why the switch happened. so now i am on a controlled crash all weekend long until i can call my dr. up and see what he rec. good luck
