Stargirl,
Rifaximin is used to treat a condition known as Traveler's diarrhea (which is caused by E.coli) as well as Crohn's disease, diverticulitis, and hepatic encephalopathy. For diarrhea, the dose is 200mg 3 times a day x 3 days. For Crohn's disease, it is 200 mg 3 times a day x 16 weeks; diverticulitis-400mg 2 times a day with mesalamine 800mg 3 times a day x 7 days, then 7 days/month; and for hepatic encephalopathy-400 mg every 8 hours x 5-21 days.
