I have been on Effexor XR for what seems like forever ... Abilify has added that" Umph" that I was lacking in concentration and focus ... however, I have gained 22 pounds since Abilify was perscribed ... I know it's Abilfy and exercise, or ... no Abilify ... and ... not so honed focus ...
Anyone made this choice???

Thanks all ... for those who recommended reasonable physical activity, the problem is that I had major back surgery 13 months ago ... still hurt ....I believeit it is a side effect of the surgery ... anyway, I can stay in any one position for longer than 20-30 mintues ... I really can walk, without my cane, for more than a block or two ...
I agree with everyone who suggests NOT stopping the Abilify, and finding some way to deal with the weight gain ...
I know one of you had "foot problems" and was therefore not likely to join a gym!
You all have been great and I thank you,
Donna

Once a person starts feeling better, they tend to eat more. Tell your doctor of your unwanted weight gain, you don't want to gain weight but you also don't want to feel bad again.

Hey dtessaro,
I, too, take Abilify and gained wait over the past few years, but I recently started being very careful what I eat and have lost 12 lbs in 6 weeks. It ain't really that bad, just smaller portions and mostly fresh fruit, raw vegies and meat. I eat fat free yogurt for snack to get my calcium. I don't exercise much due to a messed up foot, but I am still losing the weight.
I wouldn't stop the Abilify. Try the exercise and lowering your calorie intake and see what happens.
Good luck,
Laurie

I am also on the same mix of drugs you are on. I don't know how much Abilify you are taking though. I take 5mg and I love it. My doc also added it to my effexor and it has done wonders. I have not had the weight gain problem but I do have friends who have, not that much though. You seem to have gained alot. I workout almost everyday and watch what I eat so it doesent creep up on me. Good luck with this but yes I hear weight gain can happen with this drug but stay on it if you feel good.

maybe it is a combination, I had a physician tell me once that with people who are depressed they either eat more than usual or they do not have an appetite, maybe the combination of depression and getting your medication have helped you put this weight on, I hope you are able to exercise enough and able to get if off, I think most of us feel better when we have our ideal weight, I hope you are feeling much better if we can be of any further help please feel free to ask,
