Hey. Nice to meet a fellow MAOI'er. I'm not exactly sure of the interactions but I do know that by listing all my meds under the "mednotes" part this site it automatically will alert me to any interactions or unsafe meds/o.t.c. meds that I could take. Helped me greatly when I was trying to switch, and then eventually went back. I would suggest putting them together under your current medication list there and see if any alerts pop up. Also, my pharmacist has helped me a great deal in helping me to ward off possible side effects/interactons. Good luck and hopefully we can keep in touch. I don't know many people on Nardil still and would like to keep our interactons open ... pardon the pun ;)
Let me know how it goes.

Hello mcek. Your CNS (central nervous system) will be taking a major blow. I would not mix a MAOI with any other drug. The severity of complications etc are real and could be deadly, never mind harmfull. Please talk to your physician before you make a decision. Best of wishes and health, pledge

Hi there fellow MOI'er, I've been on Naril for 25yrs.I have bipolar2, w/major " treament resistant depression. And used to suffer from extreme "Social Phobia." Thank god for Nardil. My psychiatrist tried many different antidepressants before, as a last ditch effort putting me on Nardil. I'd been so depressed and crippled w/ Social Phobia for a long time, and literally about 3-weeks after taking Nardil it was like BAMN! Somebody turned the lights on. Ocassionaly, I'd go off Nardil because of the potential dangerous side effect (hypertension when eating or ingesting foods and medications that are contraindicated w/Nardil) Your prescriber I'm sure gave you a list of all the foods/medications you need to avoid?

And yes, at first (for me anyway) I would get so weak and literally at times had to crawl from my bed to the bathroom. <-That was the most extreme. After a couple weeks for me those side effects would completely go away. The weakness (because of your blood pressure going low (hypotension) would happen everytime I would go off and then once again get back on Nardil because NOTHING else worked for me. So, certainly call your doctor about this immediately and hopefully he's experieced enough with Nardil, that you can stay on it (if you choose to do so) experiencing these side effects decrease and then completely go away. I say this ONLY if Nardil turns out to work as well for you as it has for me. Nardil is rarely prescribed these days because of the potential serious side effects when ingesting something with high levels of Tyramine. I THINK this is a amino acid <-don't quote me on that) but you need to avoid eating/ingesting anythng with high levels of Tyramine.
Like fava beans, brewers yeast, and unfortunately many other things. Although the restrictions have been modified since I first started taking Nardil. There is also now as MAOI patch that is much safer then the pill form as far as the food/meds. In the 25yrs. I've taken Nardil I've had two mild reactions like I mentioned above. My heart started pounding and I began to get a very bad headache. Because my psychiatrist told me these signs, I called her immediately both times, she'd have me take my blood pressure, (I have a digital blood pressure machine, because I'm a nurses aide) I'd tell her what it was over the phone, if it wasn't dangerously high(both times it wasn't) She had me call her 20 minutes later, telling me if it goes up to call 911 before I called her, then call her to let her know. Both times I called her back, my BP was back to normal and withing about 15 minutes I was back to normal. I had these two reactions directly becsause I ate a lot of something I wasn't supposed to eat, knowing I wasn't supposed to eat it (I know, dumb right? I was 26) And the other time because for the first and last time I tried Meth! Just plain idiotic of me. Take note, all I'm sharing with you is the extreme because it is very important for you to know if you choose to give Nardil a whirl. For me, even with the beginning side effects of the dizzyness, crawling to the bathroom, and things like this EVERY time I went back on Nardil, and the potential side effects, I still choose to take Nardil because literally no other antidepressant has worked for me and Nardil works very well. The last time I went off it w/ my psychiatrist help was about 2-yrs. ago as newer antidepressants and mood stabilizers (bipolar) had come out. Nope, back on Nardil and I'm happy to be back on it. I hope this may be helpful to you in someway. And hey! I don't know many MAOI'ers either so also would love to stay connected w/you on this site to hear how your doing, thankyou, julie
Sorry, I'm back again. I forgot to tell you what meds I'm on as you have Bipolar Disorder as well. Besides Nardil I'm on Lamictal, Seroquel, and a small dose of clonipin. Of course meds and how they work and who they work well for is very individual. Let me know what meds you are on if you don't mind~
