Progesterone is what sustains the baby until the placenta takes over around 12 weeks. I had a m/c a couple of months ago, and we are now doing fertility treatments. My doc put me on progesterone supositories to ensure that if an egg is fertilized and implants, there is sufficient progesterone to keep the preganancy viable due to my progesterone deficiency.
