People who abuse pain medications snort the powder to get high. If the pain pills were of a controlled release or extended release variety like MS Contin or OxyContin crushing them bypasses the time release component of the medication and can release a large amount of the medication all at once and can be fatal in some cases. If the child has a bag of powder and he is just snorting "lines" of it there is no way to tell how many milligrams of medication he is getting and also could be fatal. You need to have a talk with your child and you may need to get him some help to stop using pain medicines. They can develop an addiction to these, especially if they are opiates, really quickly.
