We just found out that our 9 yr old granddaughter has Partial Complex Seziures. The doctor is putting her on Keppra. When I read all of the side effects it scared me. Do these side effects happen often? This is the only drug she has been put on.

Hello,
With regrads to your question, all mdications have benefits and side efffects.
Her doctor must have outweighed the benefits vs. the side effects, and that is why he put her on this med.
Not all organisms react to medications in the same way, for we ara all unique, meaning that she may experience some side effects at the beginning of her treatment or may not, it all depends on what dose she is on, if she has taken a different type of medication in the past, her age, weight, etc.
Ususally all these gigantic pharmaceutical companies list all , every possible side effect to protect themselves against law suits, meaning "we listed them, so we told you it could happen".-

maso4169, I read some more on Keppra one article I read said this drug is not to be used alone, since this is the only one the doctor gave her should my daughter and her question this? thanks
Yes, your daughter like any mother, like yoy, have to ba armed with ionformation , so as to know what to expect.
Now in my opinion at such a young age I would not put more chemicals in her organism, first I would let her take her Keppra , keeping a close eye for 2 weeks and then if required add a second medication.
But as she, your princess is just starting, I recommend you do talk to her Dr. ( I would) and be patient and hope for the best.- Remmember, the side effects are possible, but that does not mean that they occur in everyone, she might experience 1 maybe 2, and her dosage must be adjusted, but the minute she even shows signs of allergies and the more severe ones, if they happen, she will have to discontinuethe usage.
But it is possible (side effects) for them to manifest themselves as much as it is not possible.-

By the way your princess has to carry an ID card or wear a medical alert bracelet stating that you are taking levetiracetam, in case of emergency. Any doctor, dentist, or emergency medical care provider who treats you should know that you are taking levetiracetam.
To be sure this medication is not causing harmful effects, your blood may need to be tested on a regular basis. Your liver function may also need to be tested. Do not miss any scheduled appointments.
I am sure her Dr. explained this part to you guys, it is a safety measure, nothing more.-
Please take care, if you need anything, and I am able to help, it would be an honor, you are not alone on this one!!!
Take lots of care.-
Thank you again for your answers. We are more imformed today, when we found this out yesterday we were all in shock. My daughter has asked all of the questions you answered, and was told the same things. She feels alot better about all of this today. My granddaughter was told what is happening to her and she took it really well, said she was glad they knew now what was wrong, her big sister just wanted to know if she was going to be Ok and if she would still be mean, sounds just like as big sister.
We feel alot better with the information you have given us and the family druggist said if he had to pick a drug to put her on Keppra would be his 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice for her. I have hopes now that she will be Ok.
I will keep you imformed and will ask questions if any thing comes up. Thanks.
I am very nhappy that your princess took it well and also about you and your family being more calm about this unfortunate issue.-
Yes please do keep me posted.-
Have a terrific weekend, and if my memory serves me well it is the princess´s B-day coming up soon, can you wish her a Happy B-day from a caring individual please? If it´s not too much to ask.
Thank you for letting me help you and you putting your trust in me, I feel like a million dollars!
