We are looking to get pregnant and are take 30mg of Thioridazine. Any ideas on should we get off?

Hello LorneEpstein. I was on mellaril (thioridazine) some years ago. The dose is very, low. I would check with the prescribing dr. Just wondering is the mellaril being used in combination with another medication. I would also suggest that you tell the dr. that you are wanting to become pregnant. Its not a good or the best of ideas to stop thioridazine without your dr. knowing about it, because it is a strong acting medication. Sorry, that I could not be more helpfull, perhaps someone else might beable to add thier thoughts. best wishes.

The following is what the literature says about thioridazine and pregnancy:

Thioridazine has not been assigned to a pregnancy category. Animal studies have failed to reveal evidence of teratogenicity. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Thioridazine is only recommended for use during pregnancy when the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks.

A study of twenty children whose mothers took thioridazine during pregnancy reported no abnormalities in the subsequent development of those children.

I was unable to find the pharmokinetics for thioridazine so I can't say for sure how long it stays in the body but since it is taken 3 to 4 times a day, it must not stay in the body very long.
