I started tapering from 20mg per day on 12/27/11. I am down to 5mg per day now. Feeling okay. Just tremors in my gut and I have heart palputations. My doctor put me on a beta blocker for the tremors and heart palputations today. I move to 4mg per day tomorrow for a week, then 3mg for a week, then 2mg for a week, then 1mg for a week. Is the worst over for me or should I expect more withdrawal symptoms? I took 20mg a day for about 5 months. I am a 44 year old male.
Valium - What should I expect as I taper the last few stages?
Added 15 Feb 2012:
Well I go from 3mg to 2mg tomorrow. All is well!! I had a couple of anxiety "moments" last week that lasted an hour or so but that's about it. Things seem to be much clearer now (sights, sounds, smells, etc). I am very excited and looking forward to the end of this. Better days are ahead:) For anyone reading this and wanting to get off benzos, the key is a VERY slow taper, like 1mg steps. You have to want to do it though!

Hi ens1967,
I think you are probably out of the woods by now. The beta blocker should help greatly too.
I've been taking xanax on and off for over ten years, and I went off of it without a beta blocker, it was unpleasant and I should have tapered, but I didn't and it really wasn't too bad, I just shook like a terrier for a few days.
But hang on, you should get loads of opinions by 7pm tonight!
Best wishes to you,
sweet lemon

Hello ens1967. Take the Celexa if you feel the need. When its time to stop taking the Celexa, the discomfort will be little compared to your Valium withdrawal. Most times when tapering of from a benzodiazepine, a SSRI such as Paxil is given. And even in the case of a benzodiazepine, another one will be given to ease the withdrawls of the benzodiazepine being detoxed or tapered of from. Example of this tapering or detoxing of from Serax (fast acting benzodiazepine) being give Centrax (slow, long lasting Benzodiazepin) I was detoxed some years ago of from two Benzodiazepines, both occasions in a hospital and given medication (phenobarbital) to prevent any possibilty of having a seizure (still did had one). Good health and wishes to you, pledge
Well I went down to 4mg on 2/2 and all is still good. I also started taking the Celexa on 2/2. Seems to have helped with the feelings of anxiety. I drop to 3mg tomorrow. Looking forward to the end! I hope I don't have any more withdrawal symptoms!! I still getting a funny feeling in my stomach sometimes though. It's like the feeling you get when you jump of something high and it mostly occurs in the evening hours.
Hi ens1967. Good new! Congratulations!.You're almost there. Really appreciate the update. Often, people never come back to say how things are or went for them. Have a great week, pledge

My doctor gave me Celexa about 2 weeks ago to help with the withdrawal symptoms but I haven't started taking it yet. I was hoping to do this without the help of another pill. I'm wondering though if it will make things easier so I'm on the fence about taking it or not. Has anyone seen this to be a benefit? Should I just finish the last few steps of tapering and wait and see how I feel? Thanks to everyone for your guidance.
If you feel like you are doing ok, I would wait, but that's just my opinion. A lot of people need something to help get thru the withdrawals, but like I said it's a decision you will ultimately have to make. I do wish you the best... Mary
