In Brasil and ran out of toprol xl, doc gave me rx for maleato de enalapril; is that the same?

No they are not.
Both Toprol -XL (metoprolol) and enalapril are used to treat high blood pressure but they are different class of medicines.
Metoprolol is n a group of drugs called beta-blockers. Beta-blockers affect the heart and circulation (blood flow through arteries and veins). Metoprolol is used to treat angina (chest pain) and hypertension (high blood pressure). It is also used to treat or prevent heart attack.
Enalapril is in a group of drugs called ACE inhibitors. ACE stands for angiotensin converting enzyme. Enalapril is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), congestive heart failure, kidney problems caused by diabetes, and to improve survival after a heart attack.
