Tazorac side effects far worse than original problem!?

Details:
I've been using tazorac for almost 2 weeks. I was told to use it every other day if I had any... reaction and have had very severe reactions even though I haven't been using it on a daily basis. My chest had some whiteheads which is why it was prescribed. Now it is horribly red, blotchy, and dry. The worst part is the constant burning/itching sensation.
Today I took off a jacket while eating out with a friend who panicked thinking I was having an allergic reaction to my dinner! If I've already lost all of this skin will my skin improve if I stop using it?
I could deal with the redness but the itching is driving me crazy (my skin is already quite dry) and the skin on my neck and face is getting worse even though I am not using Tazorac there... could this be related?

Other common reactions (occurring in 1 to 10% of people) included: Stinging; Dermatitis; Eczema; Rash; High triglycerides; Swelling of the hands and/or feet (caused by water retention); Bleeding; Cracks in the skin; Skin discoloration; Swelling of the skin.
If you think its too bothersome? Please ask your doc to change the med which is more suitable to your skin.
