FRIDAY, Sept. 16 – Public health experts often focus immunization awareness efforts toward protecting children, and with good reason: Facing a potentially bewildering schedule of vaccinations for their young ones, parents usually need all the help they can get. But vaccinations aren't just kid stuff. Medical science is creating an increasing number of immunizations targeted at adults, to help them avoid life-threatening diseases in middle-age and opportunistic infections when they're older. "Immunization is a life-long issue that we need to pay a lot of attention to," said Dr. Georges C. Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association. New Combo Therapy May Prevent TB, Save Lives in People With HIV

WEDNESDAY, July 6 – Simpler and shorter treatment with antibiotic drugs could help prevent full-blown tuberculosis in millions of people worldwide infected with the bacterium that causes TB, especially those also infected with HIV, researchers report. TB, or tuberculosis, is the leading cause of death among people co-infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. About half a million people with both infections die worldwide every year. The new study by an international team of scientists included 1,148 South African men and women infected with the TB bacterium and HIV, who were followed for up to six years to see whose TB infections stayed dormant. It found that the most streamlined combination treatment – a high dose of 900 milligrams each of the newer antibiotic rifapentine (Priftin) and the traditional anti-TB antibiotic isoniazid once weekly for three months – worked as well or ... New TB Vaccine Passes Safety Trial

WEDNESDAY, April 8 – An experimental tuberculosis vaccine called MVA85A proved safe in a small phase I clinical trial. The study included 12 people with latent tuberculosis infection, which, when re-activated, can cause full-blown TB. It's believed that about a third of the world's population has this latent infection. The participants, who had no other complicating factors, such as hepatitis or HIV, were given the vaccine and then followed for a year. The researchers concluded that the vaccine was safe, did not produce any immunopathology and was immunogenic in the patients. Some participants had side effects that included fever, headache, fatigue and mild concerns at the site of the vaccination.
