Depression Screening Urged for Young Women With Menopause-Like Symptoms

FRIDAY, Dec. 3 – Young women with a menopause-like condition called primary ovarian insufficiency should be evaluated for depression, a new study suggests. Women with the condition, called POI for short, stop producing normal amounts of reproductive hormones, develop hot flashes, typically become infertile and, in addition, face an increased risk for depression. POI can develop as early as the teens or 20s, according to the researchers, from the U.S. National Institutes of Health. The investigators evaluated 174 women with POI and found that 67 percent either currently had depression or had been clinically depressed at least once in the past. That rate is more than twice the rate found among women in general, the researchers noted. The finding was released online in advance of publication in an upcoming print issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. Just why ... Read more

New Hope for Infertile Young Women

FRIDAY, April 30 – A new study contradicts the conventional wisdom about a common condition called primary ovarian insufficiency that can cause infertility in young women. Even though the condition causes symptoms similar to those experienced by women during menopause, researchers found that females still have immature eggs in their ovaries. The findings raise "the possibility of developing treatments for the infertility that accompanies the condition," Dr. Alan E. Guttmacher, acting director of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), said in a news release from the NIH. An estimated 1 percent of women develop primary ovarian insufficiency, also known as premature ovarian failure, by the time they turn 40. They experience hot flashes and stop having regular menstrual periods, although ... Read more

Plan Hopes to ID Early Halt in Reproductive Function

WEDNESDAY, Feb. 4 – Guidelines to help doctors diagnose and treat a menopause-like condition in girls and women younger than age 40 has been developed by a U.S. government scientist. In patients with primary ovarian insufficiency, the ovaries stop releasing eggs and producing estrogen and other reproductive hormones. This results in menopause-like symptoms such as the loss of menstrual periods, infertility, hot flashes, night sweats, sleep loss and increased risk for bone fractures and heart disease. The sudden and unexpected loss of fertility often causes patients to suffer grief, anxiety and depression. Treatment includes hormones to replace those no longer produced by the ovaries and counseling to help patients cope with their emotional challenges. Dr. Lawrence Nelson, head of the U.S. National Institutes of Health's Integrative and Reproductive Medicine Unit, has conducted ... Read more
