Thyroid Condition Linked to Heart Problems: Study
Posted 23 Apr 2012 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, April 23 – New evidence suggests that a type of overactive thyroid condition appears to boost the risk of heart problems, especially atrial fibrillation (a form of irregular heartbeat) and premature death. Patients sometimes are reluctant to do anything about the condition, known as subclinical hyperthyroidism, because it often doesn't cause any symptoms. The findings show, however, that "physicians and patients should take it seriously and consider the appropriate way to treat it to prevent increases in heart disease, bone problems and death," said Dr. Kenneth Burman, chief of the endocrine section at Washington Hospital Center, in Washington, D.C. Patients with subclinical hyperthyroidism have too much of the hormone created by the thyroid gland, which helps control people's metabolism. An estimated 10 percent of the population has the condition, which is considered to be ... Read more

Screening Moms-to-Be for Thyroid Trouble May Not Help Offspring
Posted 8 Feb 2012 by Drugs.com

WEDNESDAY, Feb. 8 – Screening and treating expectant moms for thyroid problems at the end of the first trimester doesn't improve children's IQs at age 3, a new study finds. Thyroid hormones are crucial for the development of a baby's brain and nervous system, and until the middle of the second trimester, those hormones come from the mother. Since a malfunctioning thyroid in the mother has been associated with mental impairments in her child, researchers reasoned that if they screened for maternal thyroid disease in pregnancy and treated any problems found, they might be able to improve function in the offspring. Treatment includes supplementary thyroid hormone medications such as levothyroxine. However, this large study found that the intervention did not seem to help. "This trial failed to show any beneficial effect on cognitive [mental] function in 3-year-old children whose mothers ... Read more

Mainstay Meds Often Cut Off Accidentally After Hospital Stay
Posted 23 Aug 2011 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, Aug. 23 – Many patients who are hospitalized fail to receive their regular medications for chronic conditions during their stay and often fail to restart them when they're discharged, researchers say. Patients treated in the intensive care unit (ICU) are even less likely to resume their regular medication schedule after discharge, probably because there are so many "transitions of care" to different units within the hospital and so many different care teams involved, the study found. "Sometimes we do a pretty good job of taking care of people in the hospital, but we don't do a great job of making the transition back to the community," said Dr. Chaim Bell, lead author of a study published in the Aug. 24/31 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. "That can lead to whole host of problems." Unintended discontinuation of vital medications can lead to another ... Read more

Thyroid Drugs May Raise Fracture Risk in Elderly
Posted 1 May 2011 by Drugs.com

THURSDAY, April 28 – Many seniors may be at increased risk for fractures because they take "excessive" doses of drugs used to treat thyroid problems, a new study says. The findings suggest that treatment targets may have to be modified in elderly patients with thyroid problems and that regular dose monitoring of thyroid drugs is essential into older age, the researchers said. Reporting in the online April 28 edition of the BMJ, they examined the link between fractures and levothyroxine, a synthetic form of thyroid hormone, which is widely used to treat an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism). Many patients with hypothyroidism are diagnosed in early or middle adulthood. Even though their treatment requirements change as they age, many patients remain on the same drug dose. This can lead to excess levels of thyroid hormone, which increases the risk of fractures, especially in older ... Read more
