U.S. Task Force Issues Blood Pressure Guidelines

Posted 12 days ago by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, May 15 – "Team-based care" should be used to improve patients' blood pressure control, the U.S. Task Force on Community Preventive Services recommended on Tuesday. The recommendation is based on a review of 77 studies that showed improvements in patients' control of blood pressure when they received care from a team of health professionals – a primary care doctor supported by a pharmacist, nurse, dietitian, social worker, or community health worker – rather than a primary care doctor alone. The task force found that team-based care increased the percentage of patients with controlled blood pressure, led to a decrease in both systolic (top number) and diastolic (bottom number) blood pressure, and improved results in patients with diabetes and elevated levels of blood fats. Team members assist primary care doctors by providing support and sharing responsibility for high blood ... Read more

Common Blood Pressure Drug Safe for Heart Failure: Study

Posted 10 Apr 2012 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, April 10 – Although research has suggested that the blood pressure drug losartan (Cozaar) may be tied to an increased risk of death in heart-failure patients compared to a similar medication, a new study finds that's not the case. "Use of this and other similar drugs has been shown to reduce morbidity and mortality in patients with heart failure," said Dr. Gregg Fonarow, co-director of the Preventative Cardiology Program at the University of California, Los Angeles, and director of the Ahmanson-UCLA Cardiomyopathy Center, commenting on the study results. An earlier observational study in patients with heart failure suggested that losartan was associated with higher risk of death compared to the drug candesartan (Atacand), he said. "There were, however, a number of limitations to this prior study that could have biased these results, including differences in dosing and treating ... Read more

Mice Exposed to Smoke Helped by Blood Pressure Drug: Study

Posted 7 Jan 2012 by Drugs.com

FRIDAY, Jan. 6 – The blood pressure medicine losartan [Cozaar] helped prevent lung damage in mice that were exposed to cigarette smoke for two months, researchers say. Specifically, the drug prevented lung tissue breakdown, airway wall thickening, inflammation and lung overexpansion in the animals, according to the Johns Hopkins researchers. The findings have led to a clinical trial of losartan in people with smoking-related chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). About 12 million Americans have COPD, which is the third leading cause of death in the United States. The study, published in the Jan. 3 issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, was funded by drugmaker Merck & Co. and the U.S. National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. "The results of our study in mice suggest that losartan or similar drugs could serve as an effective treatment for smoking-related lung diseases in ... Read more

Accidental Medication Poisonings in Kids on the Rise

Posted 16 Sep 2011 by Drugs.com

FRIDAY, Sept. 16 – Despite ongoing prevention efforts, a growing number of young children are being accidentally poisoned with medications, according to new research. The study, which was based on data reported to the American Association of Poison Control Centers between 2001 and 2008, found that medication poisoning among children aged 5 and under increased by 22 percent, although the number of children in the United States in this age group rose by only 8 percent during the study period. "The problem of pediatric poisoning in the U.S. is getting worse, not better," Dr. Randall Bond, of Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, said in a hospital news release. In conducting the study, which is scheduled for publication in the Journal of Pediatrics, the researchers reviewed information on over 544,000 children who landed in the emergency department due to medication poisoning ... FDA Medwatch Alert: Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (ARBs): Drug Safety Communication - Drug Safety Review Completed

Posted 4 Jun 2011 by Drugs.com

[UPDATED 06/02/2011] FDA’s meta-analysis of 31 randomized controlled trials comparing ARBs to other treatment found no evidence of an increased risk of incident (new) cancer, cancer-related death, breast cancer, lung cancer, or prostate cancer in patients receiving ARBs.   [Posted 07/15/2010] ISSUE: A recently published study - a meta-analysis combining cancer-related findings from several clinical trials - suggested use of ARBs may be associated with a small increased risk of cancer. Heart Failure Drug May Help More in Higher Doses

Posted 1 Dec 2009 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, Nov. 17 – For people with heart failure, high doses of the drug losartan, an angiotensin-receptor blocker (ARB), reduce the risk for hospital admission and death, a new study shows. Though ARBs are known to benefit people with heart failure, the study focused on whether dose level makes a difference. The findings were to be presented during the American Heart Association's annual meeting, Nov. 14 to 18, in Orlando, Fla., and were published online Nov. 17 in The Lancet. The study included 3,846 people in 30 countries who had heart failure, a left-ventricular ejection fraction of 40 percent or less and intolerance to angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. The participants were randomly assigned to take 50 or 150 milligrams a day of losartan (Cozaar). After a median follow-up of 4.7 years, 43 percent of those in the high-dose group and 46 percent of those in the ... Read more
