Will there ever be a cure for Sickle Cell anemia?

My son is being treated for Sickle Cell Anemia, and the Doctors are giving him Hydroxyurea 1,000 mgs per day. Is that to much? He is 44 years old, and it was only discovered when he was 18 years old.
