Fatty Foods During Teen Years May Influence Later Breast Cancer Risk

THURSDAY, May 19, 2016 – Teens who eat high amounts of saturated fats or low amounts of healthier mono- and polyunsaturated fats tend to have denser breasts 15 years later, new research suggests. That's important because greater breast density is a risk factor for breast cancer, the study authors said. But the researchers noted they didn't find a large change in breast density volume based on dietary fat intake. "It was a modest difference in breast density," said the study's senior author Joanne Dorgan. She's a professor of epidemiology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. While this study can't prove cause-and-effect, the researchers speculated that different fats may play different roles in breast tissue formation and maintenance. Omega-3 Fish Oil Supplements Might Boost Antidepressants' Effects

TUESDAY, April 26, 2016 – Omega-3 fish oil supplements may improve the effectiveness of antidepressants, new research suggests. Researchers reviewed the findings of eight clinical trials worldwide, as well as other evidence, and concluded that the supplements appear to help battle depression in people already on medication. "Omega-3 fish oil – in combination with antidepressants – had a statistically significant effect over a placebo," said study leader Jerome Sarris. He is head of the ARCADIA Mental Health Research Group at the University of Melbourne in Australia. The study looked at the result of trials where patients battling depression took either a standard antidepressant plus a form of omega-3 fish oil, versus the antidepressant plus an inactive placebo. 1 in 6 Seniors Takes Dangerous Combos of Meds, Supplements: Study

MONDAY, March 21, 2016 – More seniors than ever are taking supplements alongside their medications, a practice that puts them at risk for dangerous drug interactions, researchers report. More than 15 percent of older Americans took potentially life-threatening combinations of prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and dietary supplements in 2011, the study showed. That was almost a twofold increase from 2005, when 8.4 percent of seniors did so. "Alongside the growing use of multiple medications, there is also a hidden, and increasing, risk of potentially deadly drug interactions in older adults," said lead researcher Dr. Dima Qato. TUESDAY, Feb. 2, 2016 – Seafood lovers, a new study delivers good news on two fronts: Mercury found in fish doesn't lead to mental decline, and for certain people, a diet rich in fish might stave off Alzheimer's disease. Researchers who examined human brains confirmed that people who eat more seafood have more mercury in their brains. But, they found no link between higher brain levels of that neurotoxin and the kind of brain damage that is typical of Alzheimer's disease and dementia. "Everybody's saying seafood has so many health benefits, but everybody's afraid of the mercury," said lead study author Martha Clare Morris, professor of nutritional epidemiology at Rush University in Chicago. WEDNESDAY, Jan. 20, 2016 – For years, experts have preached the gospel of eating "healthy" fats and limiting "unhealthy" fats. Now, a new study contends that if people worldwide began to eat healthier fats, there might be more than a million fewer deaths from heart disease every year. Although a great deal of attention has been focused on reducing saturated fats from the diet, the researchers said the focus should be two-fold: reducing unhealthy fats such as saturated fat and trans fats, and replacing them with healthy fats, such as polyunsaturated fats. Omega-3 Fatty Acids May Play Role in Bipolar Disorder: Study

FRIDAY, Dec. 4, 2015 – A small study suggests there may be a link between levels of omega-3 fatty acids and bipolar disorder. Researchers compared 27 people with bipolar disorder and 31 people without the mental illness. Those with bipolar disorder had lower levels of certain omega-3 fatty acids that can cross the blood-brain barrier, the study authors found. Omega-3 fatty acids play an important role in communication between brain cells, and fatty acids are a major player in the immune and inflammatory systems, the researchers said. Omega 3 Supplements Don't Help With Depression: Review

FRIDAY, Nov. 6, 2015 – There's little evidence that taking omega-3 fatty acid supplements helps treat depression, researchers report. Some studies have suggested that these fish oil supplements may benefit people with major depression. But in a review published Nov. 5 in the Cochrane Library, researchers disagreed after analyzing 26 studies that included more than 1,400 people with depression. "We found a small-to-modest positive effect of omega-3 fatty acids compared to placebo, but the size of this effect is unlikely to be meaningful to people with depression, and we considered the evidence to be of low or very low quality," lead author Katherine Appleton, of Bournemouth University in the U.K., said in a journal news release. FDA Warns of Hazards From Imported Supplements

THURSDAY, Oct. 15, 2015 – You may be putting your health at risk if you use imported products such as dietary supplements or nonprescription drugs that are sold at ethnic or international stores, flea markets, swap meets or online. So says the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in a warning issued Thursday. Health product scammers often focus their marketing on people who shop at nontraditional locations. They also target consumers with limited English language skills and poor access to health care services, according to Cariny Nunez, a public health adviser in the FDA's Office of Minority Health. "These scammers know that ethnic groups who may not speak or read English well, or who hold certain cultural beliefs, can be easy targets," she said in an FDA news release. WEDNESDAY, Oct. 14, 2015 – Side effects from dietary supplements send more than 20,000 Americans to the emergency room each year, a new government study reveals. One expert said the report – published Oct. 15 in the New England Journal of Medicine – should quash arguments that herbal products, amino acids and other supplements are uniformly "safe" and need no tighter regulation. "This is the most important study done on dietary supplements since DSHEA was passed," said Dr. Pieter Cohen, an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School who studies supplement safety. Cohen was referring to the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act, a 1994 law that defined supplements as food rather than drugs. Overall, the researchers found that people who consumed the most fish lowered their risk of depression by 17 percent compared to those who ate the least. "Studies we reviewed indicated that high fish consumption can reduce the incidence of depression, which may indicate a potential causal relationship between fish consumption and depression," said lead researcher Fang Li, of the department of epidemiology and health statistics at the Medical College of Qingdao University in China. Even though alternative medicines are marketed as "natural," many contain active ingredients that can react with other therapies, the researchers explained. The study authors also found that many of these patients don't tell their doctors they are using complementary or alternative medicines (CAMs). TUESDAY, Aug. 25, 2015 – Neither exercise nor supplements such as fish oil don't seem to do much to help keep older folks mentally sharp, two new studies found. The reports, published Aug. 25 in the Journal of the American Medical Association, cast doubts on two strategies purported to keep older brains younger and healthier. In one study, two years' worth of moderate exercise didn't seem to improve the brain power of people between 70 and 89 or lower their odds for dementia. Similarly, giving older adults fish oil or other supposed brain nutrients did not keep them sharper. Chamomile Tea Tied to Longer Lives for Mexican-American Women

SATURDAY, June 13, 2015 – Consumption of chamomile may be linked to a longer lifespan for older Mexican-American women, new research suggests. The study, funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, found that among Mexican-American women who consumed chamomile, the risk of death during the study period was reduced by about 28 percent. "Drinking chamomile tea is beneficial to the health of Mexican-American women," said the study's lead author, Bret Howrey, assistant professor of family medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.
