Calcium Supplements May Be Bad for Your Heart: Study
Posted 4 days ago by Drugs.com

WEDNESDAY, May 23 – Many older Americans take calcium supplements to prevent bone loss, but they may be significantly increasing their risk for a heart attack, a new study suggests. These supplements do not help prevent heart attacks or stroke as some previous research has suggested, the study authors say. But dietary calcium might reduce the risk, they noted. "While a moderately high intake of calcium from diet may go along with a lower risk of heart attack, this is not true for supplementary calcium intake," said lead researcher Sabine Rohrmann, from the division of cancer epidemiology and prevention at the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine at the University of Zurich in Switzerland. "Instead of taking calcium supplements, men and women who want to increase their calcium intake should rely on foods, such as low-fat dairy products or mineral water, [that are] rich in ... Read more

Body Building, Diet Supplements Linked to Liver Damage: Study
Posted 5 days ago by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, May 22 – Body-building and weight-loss products are the types of dietary supplements most likely to cause liver injury, according to a small new study. Liver injury from medication is the main reason drugs are taken off the market. Dietary and herbal supplements – which do not require a prescription and can be bought over the counter or online – are used by up to 40 percent of people in the United States, but their potential side effects are not well-known. In this study, funded by the U.S. Drug-Induced Liver Injury Network, researchers looked at 109 cases of patients who appeared to have suffered liver injury because of dietary supplements. Most of the patients were male, white and overweight. The study found that supplements for body building and weight loss were most likely to cause liver injury. The results are scheduled to be presented today at the Digestive Disease ... Read more

FDA Medwatch Alert: West Coast Nutritionals Dietary Supplement Products: Recall - Undeclared Drug Ingredient
Posted 5 days ago by Drugs.com
including: Firminite, Extra Strength Instant Hot Rod, Libidron [Posted 05/21/2012] ISSUE: West Coast Nutritionals, Ltd. is conducting a recall of all lots of their dietary supplements Firminite, Extra Strength Instant Hot Rod, and Libidron to the consumer level. An FDA lab analysis of Firminite was found to contain undeclared Tadalafil. Tadalafil is an active ingredient of an FDA approved drug for Erectile Dysfunction (ED), making these products unapproved new drugs. All lots of the affected products contain undeclared Tadalafil, which can pose a serious risk to health because Tadalafil may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs such as nitroglycerin and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels. Consumers with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease often take nitrates. FDA advises that Tadalafil may cause side effects such as headaches ... Read more

Probiotic Products May Prevent Antibiotic-Linked Diarrhea
Posted 19 days ago by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, May 8 – Consuming probiotic-rich foods may decrease the risk of diarrhea for patients who are taking antibiotics, a new study suggests. Probiotics are live microorganisms that are found naturally in foods such as yogurt and are believed to provide health benefits. About 30 percent of patients who take antibiotics will experience diarrhea because the drugs disrupt gastrointestinal microbes, and diarrhea is one of the main reasons people don't adhere to antibiotic treatment. "Diarrhea is a common problem in patients receiving antibiotic therapy and may limit their use," said Dr. David Bernstein, chief of hepatology at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, N.Y. Bernstein was not involved in the new study. "While these antibiotics treat the underlying infection, they also alter the normal gut [microbes], which leads to diarrhea," Bernstein said. "Replacing [the microbes] ... Read more

Taking Multivitamins Won't Prevent Canker Sores, Study Says
Posted 5 Apr 2012 by Drugs.com

THURSDAY, April 5 – Although vitamin deficiencies have been linked to canker sores, taking a daily multivitamin won't prevent this common mouth ailment, a new study finds. The study found that people with recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), the medical name for canker sores, received no benefit from taking a daily multivitamin as a preventive measure. Previous research on canker sores had shown a benefit to patients with vitamin deficiencies when they took large doses of vitamins. Participants in the new study did not have significant vitamin deficiencies, and the vitamin dose was much smaller – although still equivalent to the recommended daily dose. Patients taking a placebo treatment had no more episodes of the oral lesions than those taking a vitamin regimen. "Giving patients prone to RAS multivitamins did not reduce the duration or frequency of canker sores, so in clinical ... Read more

CDC: Americans' Levels of Vitamins, Nutrients Basically OK
Posted 2 Apr 2012 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, April 2 – Most Americans have good levels of vitamins A and D and folate – a B vitamin – but some groups of people need to increase their levels of vitamin D and iron, according to a federal report released Monday. The study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also found that rates of vitamin and nutrient deficiencies vary by age, gender and race/ethnicity, and can be as high as 31 percent for vitamin D deficiency among blacks. The study results were based on measurements of vitamins and nutrients in blood and urine samples collected between 1999 and 2006 from participants in the CDC's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. "These findings are a snapshot of our nation's overall nutrition status," Christopher Portier, director of CDC's National Center for Environmental Health, said in an agency news release. Vitamin E Supplements Don't Affect Heart Failure Risk: Study
Posted 20 Mar 2012 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, March 20 – Vitamin E supplements don't appear to affect a healthy woman's overall risk of heart failure one way or the other, researchers report. "It neither increases nor decreases the risk," said study author Dr. Claudia Chae, a cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital. This latest finding, published in the March 20 issue of Circulation: Heart Failure, differs from previous reports of an increased risk of heart failure with the use of the supplement. However, those studies looked at the effect of the supplements in women who had heart disease or diabetes or who had suffered a heart attack. The new study is believed to be the first to look at whether vitamin E supplements might help healthy women avoid heart failure. The new study, Chae said, "adds to a pretty substantial body of data" that does not support the use of supplements for preventing heart disease. Vitamin E ... Read more

Dietary Help Can Boost Cancer Patients' Nutrition, But Not Survival
Posted 15 Feb 2012 by Drugs.com

WEDNESDAY, Feb. 15 – Good dietary advice and supplements can boost nutrition while improving quality of life in malnourished cancer patients, a new study finds. However, the interventions do not appear to affect survival for these patients, according to the findings published in the Feb. 15 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. For the study, Christine Baldwin, a lecturer in the nutritional sciences division at King's College London, and colleagues analyzed data from 13 clinical trials that included a total of more than 1,400 cancer patients who were malnourished or at risk of malnutrition. Some of the patients received oral nutritional support (dietary advice and/or supplements) while others received routine care. Oral nutritional support had a wide range of effects on both weight and energy intake, and led to improvements in aspects of quality of life, such as ... Read more

No Cancer Benefit From Vitamin B, Omega-3 Supplements in Heart Patients
Posted 13 Feb 2012 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, Feb. 13 – Patients with a history of heart disease will most likely not reduce their risk for developing cancer by taking vitamin B and/or omega-3 fatty acid supplements, a new French analysis suggests. "In the population we studied, we found no beneficial effects of either B vitamins or omega-3 fatty acids taken over five years on cancer occurrence or cancer-related death," noted study author Valentina Andreeva, who is with the nutritional epidemiology research unit at the University of Paris XIII in Bobigny, France. Andreeva and her colleagues report their findings in the Feb. 13 online edition of the Archives of Internal Medicine. To explore the protective potential of B vitamins and fatty acid supplements, the authors did a secondary analysis of data that had been collected in a previous study involving almost 2,000 French men and 500 women. All were between 45 and 80 years ... Read more

Heart Patients Using Vitamins May Take Meds Improperly
Posted 15 Nov 2011 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, Nov. 15 – People with heart conditions who take vitamins may be less likely to take some of their other medications properly, according to a new study. Researchers from the Intermountain Medical Center in Utah asked 100 people with an irregular heartbeat – known as atrial fibrillation – what they knew about warfarin (Coumadin), a commonly prescribed blood thinner. The patients were also asked how well they followed their prescription for the drug, and whether or not they also took vitamins or other supplements. People taking warfarin need regular monitoring because too much of the drug can cause bleeding, and too little can allow blood clots to form, increasing the risk for stroke. In addition, diet also plays a role in warfarin's effectiveness. The study, presented Monday at the American Heart Association's annual meeting in Orlando, Fla., found that 62 percent of patients ... Folic Acid in Pregnancy May Prevent Kids' Language Delays
Posted 11 Oct 2011 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, Oct. 11 – Taking folic acid supplements before and during pregnancy was linked to a decreased risk of a having a child with a severe language delay at age 3, according to new research. The Norwegian study found that women who took no folic acid supplements before and during pregnancy had more than twice the risk of having a child with a serious language delay compared to women who took folic acid supplements. "Maternal use of supplements containing folic acid within the period from four weeks before, to eight weeks after conception was associated with a substantially reduced risk of severe language delay in children at age 3 years," said the study's lead author Christine Roth, a Ph.D. student in the division of mental health at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health in Oslo. FDA Medwatch Alert: Uprizing 2.0: Recall - Undeclared Drug Ingredient: Synthetic Steroid
Posted 10 Oct 2011 by Drugs.com
ISSUE: FDA notified the manufacturer that lab analyses found that the product, sold as a testosterone booster, contains superdrol, a synthetic steroid, making it an unapproved new drug. Acute liver injury is known to be a possible harmful effect of using products containing synthetic anabolic steroids. In addition, use of synthetic anabolic steroids may cause other serious long-term adverse health consequences in men, women, and children. These include shrinkage of the testes and male infertility, masculinization of women, breast enlargement in males, short stature in children, a higher predilection to misuse other drugs and alcohol, adverse effects on blood lipid levels, and increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and death. BACKGROUND: On August 5, FDA made Superior Metabolic Technologies Inc aware that Uprizing 2.0 contains superdrol, which is banned by the FDA. Uprizing 2.0 was ... Read more

Dietary Supplements May Harm Older Women: Study
Posted 10 Oct 2011 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, Oct. 10 – Far from being healthy, supplements such as multivitamins, minerals and folic acid may actually raise the odds for death in older women who take them, a new study suggests. Dietary supplements are widely used in the United States, often with the hope of avoiding chronic disease. However, the long-term health consequences of many compounds are unknown, the researchers said. "Our study raises concerns about the safety of a number of commonly used dietary supplements," said lead researcher Jaakko Mursu, a nutritional epidemiologist at the University of Eastern Finland, in Kuopio. "We would advise people to reconsider whether they need to use supplements and put more emphasis on a healthy diet," he said. The report was published in the Oct. 10 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine. For the study, Mursu's team collected data on nearly 39,000 women who took part in the ... Read more

Mom's Healthy Diet Might Cut Birth Defect Risk
Posted 3 Oct 2011 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, Oct. 3 – Pregnant women who eat a healthy diet appear to reduce the risk of having a baby with a major birth defect, such as spina bifida or a cleft lip or palette, a new study suggests. Neural tube birth defects – including spina bifida and other brain abnormalities – are known to decrease when pregnant women take supplements of folic acid, a type of vitamin B that also has been added to a variety of foods. However, folic acid alone does not prevent all birth defects, the researchers said. "There may be certain qualities of foods that have benefits that aren't captured by examining just one nutrient at a time," said lead researcher Suzan L. Carmichael, an associate professor of pediatrics at Stanford University. Diet could also be related to reducing birth defects because a combination of nutrients from a variety of foods may act together in a beneficial way, Carmichael ... Read more
