Very few studies have been done looking at the use of dong quai in humans. Some lab tests suggest that dong quai contains compounds that may help reduce pain, dilate blood vessels, and stimulate and relax the muscles of the uterus. More studies are needed to see whether dong quai is safe or effective.
Treatment
Dong quai is sometimes suggested for the following conditions: Menopausal symptoms
Some women report relief of symptoms such as hot flashes when taking dong quai. Researchers aren't sure whether dong quai has estrogen-like effects or if it blocks estrogens in the body, and the studies so far have been conflicting. One study found that dong quai did not help to relieve menopausal symptoms.
For black cohash you could read more and on: http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/blackcohosh

Hey helpmehawaii,
Yes, my gyn doc recommends black cohosh for menopausal symptoms along with evening primrose and soy. I would definitely give it a try. May take several weeks to get maximum benefit so be patient. The Vit D and calcium are essential as well.
If this doesn't work I would like to recommend another supplement. It is called Mendopause. You can google it. It also has black cohosh in it. My girlfriend takes it and her hot flashes went from 10 a day down to 3 a day in a week and to none in 4 weeks.
Let me know how it goes and if you ever want to investigate the Mendopause just shoot me a pq and I'll send ya the link.

Hi - I have found black cohosh and evening primrose oil help quite a bit with hot flashes, PMS symptoms and mood swings that I associate with perimenopause. Personally, I prefer to use a single supplement rather than a blend. I like to know what specifically helped (or hurt, depending onthe situation). I hope you get relief soon -

Hi helpmehawaii! So nice to meet you! :)
I'm not using any supplements at the present time. I just wanted to strongly suggest to make certain that your doctor is aware of all herbs, natural drugs, vitamins & over the counter drugs that you're taking.
I've used evening primrose oil for leg cramps years ago & had good success for that issue of mine.
All the best to your health, hawaii!
