Rachel morris,
Why would you give her the amitriptyline for a headache anyway? If she is suffering from headaches while taking this medication, then you should talk to her doctor about it because headaches are a known possible side effect of taking amitriptyline. So are heart problems and seizures. If her headaches won't subside with normal ibuprofen, then I would suggest talking to her doctor. Hope this helps.

There is no reason to give her a anti-depressant,you can try Imitrex(sumatriptan)my friend takes it and says it really helpsI would also get migranes for periods at a time where i was light sensitive and I took Fiornal with codiene but with the Fiornal it contains a weak barbituate,30mg of codiene, caffiene and aspririn and it worked for me but you may not want to give to a 14 year old but you can get it without the codiene. And some over the counter drugs work good and fast one I found is Bayer quick release crystalsit has 850 mg of aspirin and 65mg of caffeine to make it start working faster, and its powder so it starts right away.If you dont like these options you should go to a doctor maybe a neurologist. But all elavil will do is make her sleepy and out of it.Good Luck its tough ive been there

I am 40 and just started taking this medication for headaches. Reading up with the doctor on amitriptyline showed many confirmed cases of improvement for tension/stress headaches. My headaches were not touched by migraine medication (RX or otc) and the cause is still unknown. I have been dealing with the headaches for over a year and a half, several tests later and several medications later, this one seems to be helping. If that sounds similar to your daughters types of headaches, I would consider giving it a try. Hope this helps some.

My daughter has been put on a very low-dose of amitriptyline as well. She is also 14. She has missed a great deal of school due to what they believe are migraines. Elavil is known to prevent migraines, so we are trying it while we await the results of an MRI and EEG. Let me know how your daughter does, I would like to know what ends up working for her - I wonder if the headaches are similar to my daughter's... pounding in the back of her head - unilateral (one side), but that is something that is almost bearable... when the headache spreads around the sides of her head and into the front of her head, that is something she describes as a stabbing pain that is unbearable. This has been very, very frustrating.
My daughter is 18 and she started getting headaches daily when she was 14. We have tried so many different things and spent so much money trying to get help. We have just been prescribed with 10mg of Elavil and after reading all the side effects I am so scared to put her on this. I understand how frustrating it can be. It has been 4 years watching my daughter in pain and I don't know what else to do. Have you seen results and what side effects have you seen?

discuss your concerns with you her physician what you might do is ask him what is the least effective dose that will show whether she tolerates it without the start pf major side effects, she's your daughter you have the right to question her doctor, are the headaches affecting her daily life? can she funvtion like a 14 year old? is she in constant pain? I am just trying to get you to weigh the pro's and cons, I am allergic to this class of drugs the effects they cause me wouldn't be impossible for me to use this but I am trying to encourage you to lot at the whole picture I wish you only the best

This is an old thread, however, for any interested parties, I should suggest that this drug be used as a last resort. Side effects may continue AFTER discontinuation of the drug. I took Amitriptyline for less than a year and still suffer sexual dysfunction years later. At the time it caused depression ( I was not depressed and taking a small dose for pain/ migraines), suicidal thoughts, weight gain and more. The continuation of side effects suggests actual gene mutation or manipulation by the drug, in a permanent sense.
This is really worrying me now. I don't know if I should give it to my 18 year old daughter who has been suffering for 4 years now of headaches on a daily basis.

OTC pain relievers aren't always the best answer when you get headaches daily. When you're getting them that frequently you need something to prevent them. and tricyclic antidepressants have been shown to help prevent migraines and headaches.
