I was on TPN for exactly six months. My body began to reject it and was severely affecting my liver. TPN can be used for months-years, it all depends on how the patient tolerates as well as whether or not you are able to eat and absorb natural food. I hope this helps, feel free to write back with any questions.

Right now I am still having a lot of diarhea so that means my body still isn't tolerating food. I am on TPN and Tube feeding. I am also on a full liquid diet. Food by mouth goes much better than tube feeding, however, I still have diarhea with that too. How long were you on a full liquid diet? How long before you were able to eat soft foods than solid foods? At what point do you know you can get off of TPN and tube feedings? When there is no more diarhea and more solid stools? This is where I am confused is how to they know when to take you off the TPN and tube feeding.
