3 years ago was given an od of demerol while hospitalized. I also had a morphine drip but my veins were too thin for the iv which kept falling out, so whether that drug would have worked or not is unknown.
Am about to have internal surgery and am afraid to go back on demerol. Any suggestions? Also post-op for some reason vicodin doesn't work, codeine works some as does Lortab but not like vicodin used to. Any suggestions would be very appreciated.
Thanks much for the helpful comments. Vicodin isn't an option because for some reason it doesn't work on me. I guess my main fear is that I will be in pain and the Rx will be ineffective. Probably a common fear, too. Thans again, I will speak with the doctor(s)/nurse(s) about your suggestions.
Vicodin (hydrocodone) is not a very strong opiate but it is usefull for short term acute pain. It's virtually useless as a chronic pain med. You need sustained release for long term chronic pain. Hydrocodone isn't even used here in Canada except in prescription cough syrup....Dave

I would have to say Morphine too. I understand you are afraid, and frankly, I cant blame you at all. Someone made a huge mistake and calculated that does of demerol wrong and i am hoping action was taken against that individual. post surgery you metnioned Vicodin wasn't an option? What about Percocet? Percocet is very commonly used after a procedure and works fantastic to relieve pain. Talk to you Dr. about your concerns and if possible, The Nurse who will be treating you after the surgery. This may ease you a bit before going in for the procedure.
