All of the psychoactive drugs have side effects. Some are tolerated better than others and some can take one while others have problems with it. Your doctor is probably just being cautious and starting you on a low dose until she knows how you respond to it.
Also, in my own experience, these types of drugs can begin to work in less than 2 weeks. It may not be the same for everyone though.
