... I'm wondering how much hair loss or hair bleaching to expect as well as darkening of skin color. Is it spotty, like age spots or more generalized, like a tan? 'Just wondering what otherss are experiencing. Thanks for your input

I experienced mild hair loss with Methotrexate but no noticeable hair loss that I can remember when I started Plaquenil and Prednisone. I did have a thick head of hair though so I might not have noticed as much as someone with thinner hair to begin with. (I switched from Prednisone & Plaquenil to Methotrexate & Plaquenil after about 1 yr. I prefer Methotrexate.) (My Prednisone dose was considered moderately high. My Plaquenil dose has remained at 600mg/day).
Regarding changes in skin color, I have not noticed any. I am of Nordic heritage and have fair skin so any changes would have been noticeable. As I said, it hasn't been a problem for me.
I'm not sure how to respond to hair bleaching. I seem to be graying faster since beginning these meds. Perhaps this is bleaching?? Not sure. The meds will effect the outcome of your color if you dye your hair, though. Most professionals know how to adjust for it if you let them know that you are taking meds.
Hope this helps!

I am constantly amazed at the different way every RAologist treats different patients!!
Anyhoo, I had minimal loss, but then I have/had A LOT of hair. My hair is completely white underneath, so I wouldn't be able to tell. I am on Plaquenil and Methotrexate now. I have noticed a lot more hair loss since Methotrexate than I ever did with Plaquenil only. I hadn't heard about a skin coloring change, I doubt though we would get lucky enough to have an "even tan." Too good to be true.
However, it doesnt really matter in the long run. If you can tolerate the meds then your life will only get better and that is all that matters to me anyway. I did concede to the hair problem by getting it styled short (8 inches off!!! ), that was truly the hardest step I had to take yet.
Don't give up!!
