I have RA, and recently developed Uveitis or inflammation of the eyes due to the RA and Sjogrens syndrome. It affects my vision and it can cause blindness if not controlled with the RA medications. I had a severe flare of the Uveitis in December 2013-January 2014. I could not see for a month, and was sensitive to light. I had scar tissue forming in my pupil area from it. It all began when I was a week from undergoing shoulder surgery so I had been taken off a biologic, and I was not on prednisone when the Uveitis flare occurred. It happened so fast in the matter of about 8 hours and I could not see. I had a low grade fever with it and abdominal pain. I had no idea when it happened what was going on. I thought I had conjunctivitis. Thank god the Ophthalmologist knew what it was right away and that it was my RA. I was put on 60 mg of prednisone a day, dilating eye drops, and steroid eye drops, and started on Humira. Finally months later I was off the prednisone and then the Uveitis came back by September 2014 while still on Humira. Has anyone else had this problem with their eyes? I now am also fighting an ulcer on my right eye cornea. So I have not been allowed to start on a new biologic because of the infection of the ulcer on my cornea. I am on antibiotic eye drops, steroid eye drops (due to the ongoing Uveitis) and prednisone 15-20mg a day. The Ophthalmologist said the ulcer probably started as an abrasion that did not heal due to all the immunosuppressant drugs for the RA and Uveitis. I can't seem to win here. They want to put me on Simponi when the ulcer heals. Please if anyone else has had a similar experience or had Uveitis or Iritis and been able to control it please let me know. It scares me to death. The other issues that can result from the steroids that scare me are cataracts, and glaucoma. Also I have read that sometimes procedures performed on the eye such as cornea transplant or graft for the ulcer can fail to heal and patients then lose the entire eye.
