I have been on Pamelor 35 mg. for interstitial cystitis for over 6 months. A depression accompanied the IC flare up. The chronic constipation prohibited increasing the dose of Pamelor. The constipation also made the IC worse. The doctor now wants me to change to Prestiq. Is constipation a side effect of Prestiq? Has anyone used Prestiq for IC? Thanks so much.

Hi,
I have IC. I was diagnosed 6 years ago. I was and still am being treated with a medication called amitriptyline. It has worked well for me but everyone responds to meds differently, especially when treating IC. I recently started taking Pristiq for anxiety. Yes, I found that constipation was a side effect from Pristiq. I think it may be a good idea to discuss your concerns with your doctor and weigh out the pros and cons. Good luck.
Thanks for your comment. Glad that your medication is working for you. I have talked to the doctor about the problems with constipation. I checked with another psychiatrist and neither said their patients reported constipation when on Prestiq. I have learned a few things about IC (the flareup last year was the second time I have had a round with IC --- the first was 10 years ago). One... it is definitely related to hormones. If my estrogen is low, my bladder is more prone to act up. Two... it is related to sleep. Poor sleep makes the problem worse. Three... medications do help. Lexapro helped me 10 years ago, but it was at a dose which numbed me and I became "fluffy" (my urologist term for gaining weight). Four... coffee and wine do make it worse, but I have had little success using "anti-acid" products. Five... treating IC is an art with little science, from my experience. After a year of bladder problems, my urologist suggested yoga... that was it, yoga.

I also have IC and but I take Elmiron and Elavil for it. I take Lyrica for nerve pain/fibromyalgia and do not have a problem with constipation. The only thing I have found is that Lyrica at times can make me sleepy. It doesn't always happen, but does sometimes. I am a stay-at-home mom, so I have the luxury of an afternoon nap if needed. I take my doses of Lyrica 3 times a day, but have heard from a friend who also takes Lyrica for pain that he takes one pill in the morning and 2 at bedtime. Since I also take Valium in the afternoon, I don't mind splitting the doses. I have a large medication list, and yet the only time I get constipated is when I need a narcotic for either pain or cough. I hope this in some way helps you, and along with the previous poster, I am interested in how things are working out for you. Best wishes - TC

Thank you for your comment. You are having success with Lyrica and it does not constipate you? Is this correct?
I have IBS and it has become complete constipation because of Pamelor. Plus, I cannot get to the maintenance dose because of the constipation so my IC is bothersome -- sometimes better and sometimes worse. I am just seeking a good quality of life and happiness without my bladder dominating my life. I am hoping to find a medication without side effects that complicate my life even further.
