i am starting at 40mg, then decreasing how long before i should be down to zero

Hope you are not self medicating. Infections with prednisone without proper diagnosis, could be a virus or could be bacterial, can land you in the hospital. People generally do not take prednisone as an add on med with an infection as it lowers the ability to fight infection. 40mg is way too high for that treatment, in my experience.
