I finally started the Subutex-so many questions! I followed your guidelines, but was soooo miserable (22 on COW scale) I figured I could'nt feel any worse!
Tried low dose 2mg -what a nightmare! Took at 6:00 PM, horrible; cont'd 2mg
until I reached 10 mg total (instead of listening to my Dr. 8 mg X 2)...up all night - now I realize why you said don't take close to bed! Soooo weak this am, thinking I should have dosed higher, then UPS guy delivered my meds at 10:00 am. I feel horrible; can barely make it to bathroom,,,my pain is on a scale of 10-what do I do?? Will my MS Contin work now that I have taken the Sub? It has been 14 hrs. taking 10mg. of Sub-I cannot move. Please note, I did not take this for recreation, it was for pain-the Sub is not working for my pain-did I just not give it long enough??

P.S. I now know what Dantes's 7th level of hell is!! When can I start my pain meds again-I cannot do this-I need to function! Thanks to all for your advice!

Sorry about my confused state-question is-if I want to try this again, I know I was not high enough on COWS-but how much should I start with of Subutex? I thought low dose was better, but it did not work for me! How long before the Subutex starts working on the pain?? This was my worst nightmare ever!

acj,
I can only hope and pray that your paralysis resolved after your C2-3 surgery. That's really bad luck... did you fall from a deer stand or what? Nevermind... First who is the doc that thinks you need a pain medication vacation? Your surgeon (can't believe that, my dad was a surgeon) or your Pain doc (don't understand that either) or your Internist/Family Practice doc (he's a nut... ). Doesn't sound like, to me, that you are on an excessive amount of pain medication.
If you are not seeing a pain management doc, get to one a soon as possible. Since I have been in chronic pain for 10 years and have never had a doc talk to me that way (pain doc), I would suggest you get to a good doc as soon as possible, dude. Just saying, my opinion only.

Yes, the surgery did "mostly" solve the paralysis. I "played hard" - horses, skydiving when younger; felt like a had pinched nerve in my neck X3wks.
A friend had me go to chiro-he did not take x-rays-just adjusted a herniated disc into my spinal cord causing instant paralysis and "do not pass go" directly to surgery. I was told my neck was such a much- the DDD was so bad I should go to PM DR. until I had more surgery the other disc C4-7. PM DR states he wants me off opiates for 2 wks and to "TRY" suboxone-just wrote the RX-took my last meds this am-scared to death! Every day is with pain, however I can work part time and live my life with my medications. Now they are being taken away for 2 wks. What MG should I start on? Super Bowl tonight-work tommorow-not a good time!! Pharmacist says I CAN take MS if I have too much pain, but won't Sob's block it? If I take 8mg now, will I go into early W/D's?? Don't want to take at Super Bowl!
acj,
And that, my dear is why I NEVER go to a chiropractor. You should be greatful that you are still alive, Bless You, cause God had His Hand on you during your hard time playing (I played hard also, and am now trying to live with my just consequences). I don't believe I would take the subutex, suboxone or whatever because, if I remember correctly, as those are actually two of the Class II narcs I've yet to get my hands on, I think they have both a narcotic agonist/antagonist in each. That doesn't sound like fun, and with the antagonist part of those meds, how long must thou be off of them before your regular narcs start to relieve your pain again.
Yes, it does indeed sound like a trip to hell-just getting the full pain back so I can take it away only to switch back in a week! I think he wants me to evaluate my "real" pain level... not a fun way to do it!!

If you stil have opiates left, and want to enjoy the superbowl do NOT try to take the subutex. You must be short acting opiate free for at least 24 hours before attempting to take subutex or you may risk something called precipitated withdrawal, i. E. Really bad withdrawal. I could be wrong on this part, but i am pretty sure ms-contin is long acting opiate and you actually should be in opiate withdrawal longer than 24 hours for long acting opiates. Now, you can take ms- contin or opiates once you are stabilized on subs, but most people say it blocks it, therfore the ms- contin won't work for pain relief. Many have written in when their pm dr prescribed on opiate on top of subutex, none of them seemed to get the relief from the opiates. That might not be true for everyone, but if it works, i hqve never read of anyone on this site saying it did.
Thanks Patti!

Hi acj,
No, you cannot take MsContin nor any other pain med with that much Subutex. And are we talking about Subutex or Suboxone? There is a difference. However, it's the Buprenorphine in both that makes you unable to use other pain meds. You could, if you were taking .5 mg to 1 mg a day. Then you could use other pain meds. But not 8 mg, and most especially not 8 mg BID. That's impossible. The Bupe will block the MsContin and quite likely you would wind up in horrible wds because MsContin is time released Morphine. I know this gets complicated, so just trust me.
Your Doc is also wrong on what a pain pill vacation is. It means staying off the pain pills, but without Subutex. Sub is not a short acting drug. It also seems to make your tolerance to reg pain meds go up, not down. It might be possible to take a pain pill vacation for 1 or 2 weeks using only 2 mg of Subutex. But that much may not stop the wds you will feel.
Thank you so much-it helps a lot!
Hi acj,
I take subutex every day for pain. I have been told I can take breakthrough but i do not take a chance as I am afraid of precipitated withdrawal. Subutex does help my pain however its not like an opiate that you are going to get high off of. but it will help your pain if you give it a chance.
