I have been taking 30mg oxycodone for a year and I want to get off badly. I take 2 30mg pills a day but, I want to avoid bad withdrawals. I no longer have any back pain but, Everytime I stop taking the pills, I start having withdrawals. I take the pills daily to avoid withdrawals. I have no use for the pills and don't want to take them at all but, the withdrawals get so bad that I end up taking something to avoid withdrawals. I have no interest in getting high at all. I just don't want the withdrawals and I refuse to take meth or suboxone. Someone please help me avoid withdrawals and the depression that I am going thru. There has to be something I can do or take that will get me past the withdrawals and bring me back to life. I am ruining my life and everyone around me. What can I do to minimize the withdrawals and get my motivation back. Someone please help me.

Are you on the short acting oxycodone 30mg or the long acting? If you are on the short acting pills you can cut them in half and try taking 15mg in the am and 15 mg in the pm then cut that in half taking 7.5mg in the am and 7.5 in the pm then go to trying 7.5mg once a day then every other day until you can quit. If you take the long acting form you cant cut those up. It is too dangerous to do that so you may need to enlist your Drs help in doing that by reducing the dose. I'm not an expert on this particular subject but that is how I would try to do it. You might look into the Thomas Recipe for withdrawals. many folks on here say that it helps control symptoms of withdrawal. Hopefully Pattishan or someone will help you. They are very good and have been through this themselves. Good Luck and good for you for recognizing that your back pain is gone and you should be going off your meds!!! You can do it if you are determined!

It is possible to get off the oxycodone without much in the way of withdrawals. You will need to taper your dose slowly over the next few weeks. As long as you have immediate release oxycodone, not extended release (don't believe there is a 30 mg extended release) then you can cut your pills in half. Reduce by half a pill every week. So that is take one pill in the morning and half a pill in the evening for a week, then reduce to one pill a day for a week, then to half a pill for a week, then try to cut the halves into fourths and take a fourth for a week then you should be able to stop. The only problem with this plan is being able to cut the pills into halves and fourths. It would be better to get 5 or 10 mg pills from the doctor and use them to taper a little less every week.
You may still experience a little withdrawal but it shouldn't be too bad. I really recommend that you get a lower strength pill in order to taper. I think it would be easier and less chance of experiencing withdrawals.
I hope this makes sense, if you have questions then repost,

Well unfortunatly, I know all about withdrawls and trying to get off prescription meds. The drs tell me that meds are harder to quit than any other drug, due to the effect they have on your brain. Because there are so many different chemicals in the brain that are unaturally released when you use, that long term usage causes your body to basically forget how to function properly without the drugs. Hence the withdrawls. Also besides just the physical aspect of withdrawl, your brain will continue to let you know its desire for the drug long after you stop, due to the depletion of the many different chemicals. In my experience through the years, the best way to quit without using suboxone, is to give yourself atleast 3-4 days without any obligations, such as work. In these 1st few days you will experience hell but once you get thru that it becomes mostly mental. For 1st days, get you some tylenol pm's or some kinda sleep aid. Melatonin helps.
Eat lots of bananas, to help with leg cramps. Lay in a hot bath frequently. You will want some Immodium ad on hand, and possibly something for nausea. Just try to rest as much as possible and stay strong. Once you get thru 1st 3-4 days, then MAKE yourself get up and around. Start small, but force yourself to do different activities and soon you will experience this crazy energy that you dont what to do with! This will soon pass and you will start to level out. You will not be really motivated to do anything at all for a while but if you make yourself continue on then it will eventually come. The mental aspect is the hardest. I found my strength through Gods help after I had tried everything else. I hope the best for you and feel free to ask anything.

It sounds like your ready to stop and you're serious, that's great. I had back surgery and was on oxy along with other pain medications for around two years, very high doses due to tolerance at that. I was like you and scared of withdrawals due to being in health care field for 9 years I've seen what can happen, I was scared for very good reasons. I signed into detox and was out in 5 days feeling new but still scared because in detox your sheltered and out I knew if I wanted I could get more but I didn't and it's not gonna be easy and it's a long long road ahead. I do wish you the best of luck and I was scared of methadone As well but I did have subutex in detox and left with suboxone, very short term. I am thankful I reached out for help and I'm glad you are as well. I wish I could give you some secret to make it all better but in all honesty there isn't one :( .
A very small percent of people don't have withdrawls after prolonged use, even as prescribed as I didn't abuse. I wish you the best of luck and my heart goes out to you!
Oh and one last thing, when you do stop you more than likely will feel more pain than your accustomed to because your body will be more sensitive to pain due to ignoring it for so long, so stick with it and know the pain does ease up.

I have been dependant on taking 30mg oxycodone for 4 years and every single day and night, every hour and minuet and every second of my entire four year I have a few in my system and trust and believe me it is highly addictive. In order to stop taking pills you must believe in yourself and have courage to be motivated and in order to exercise your mind body and soul. Some folks are able to leave their current state and to rehibilitated into a facility away from home just to come back to getting on pills again. Some folks leave their homes and would visit a close friend or relative for a week or two just to go cold turkey. I'm letting you know that these examples would not work at all for most people who are addicted. If you like more information on how to get off of these addictive pills please email me at bronxkid63@yahoo. Com subject line please put "help please"...

Hi my name is Alex the best way to get off those pills and have very little withdraws.the withdraws would probly feel like a cold. What you do is cut your doses. instead of takeing 1 in the morning and one at night. Take half of one in the morning. and half of one at night. for a week. then for one more week cut the half into half again. it should be 25% of th pill. after taking that for a week. take 25% of the pill one time a day for a week.after that week stop taking them. you will probly feel like you have a fever or a cold. for like 4 days but after that it's up to you to fight the cravings. the way i fight my craving is working out or keeping buizy. other than my spelling i hope. no beter yet i belive in you. you could do it. your in my prayers and God Bless...

Withdrawls are the worse feeling I ever have had in my entire life and if not for the pain I would try and get off these damn pills just as these people have advised you to do! Baby Steps but diligently! Most people don't realize chronic pain and if they ever had a back injury they too would take 32 tooth aches at the same time instead of chronic pain! We didn't ask to be injured and most of us are telling the truth but it's the Hoarding from Idiots like my ex brother in-law. He lies just to get high and this hurts us who don't want these pills but also can't tolerate the pain associated with these pills. God Blessed you by surviving the pain and healinand he will also help you along with these good peoples advise and help you cut them from your life. You should thanks these people for their help even though they are not all in the medical field. Surviving pain med addition and also healing is the best gift anyone could recieve.
Decrease the pills a little every week and then 6 days down to 5 and so on but not all in a month! Take it slow and if you feel a cold coming on it's the reaction to not enough meds. Never take more but just enough to kill the withdrawl and give a 1/2 pill at least 90 minutes to kick in! It's a bad and wicked way to die by with drawls but never CUT A PILL THAT DOES NOT HAVE A LINE IN IT! CONSULT A DOCTOR OR BE A MAN OR WOMAN AND GO SEEK HELP AT THE COUNTY HOSPITAL IF YOU HAVE NO INSURANCE. A COUNTY HOSPITAL CAN NOT TURN YOU AWAY. I AM STRUGGLING TO GET STRONGER AND ALSO TRY AND CUT DOWN ON THE MEDS BECAUSE I KNOW THE DAMAGE THEY HAVE DONE. BE STRONGER THAN THE DAMN PILLS IF YOUR PAIN IS GONE. REMEMBER THEY MASK THE PAIN SO BE CAREFUL THAT YOU ARE NOT FOOLING YOURSELF! BRAVE MEN AND WOMEN SEEK HELP FROM OTHERS WHO KNOW MORE THAN THEMSELVES! WITHDRAWLS WILL CHANGE YOUR ATTITUDE KILLING RELATIONSHIPS SO BABY STEPS AND CONTRLLED HELP FROM THE MEDICAL FIELD BECAUSE THEY ARE TRAINED WITH THIS TYPE OF PROBLEM. DON'T LISTEN TO EVERYONES ADVISE JUST BECAUSE THEY WENT COLD TURKEY BECAUSE EVRY ONES BODY IS DIFFERENT AND SOME HEARTS ARE STRONG ENOUGH TO MAKE IT THROUGH ONCE OR TWICE BUT NEVER ANYTIME THEY THINK THEY CAN KICK IT WITHOUT CUTTING BACK VERY VERY SLOWLY! THINK BEFORE DOING SOMETHING STUPID AND CALL A DOCTOR OR HOSPITAL FOR HELP. THIS IS SOMETHING NOT TO TAKE ON ALONE. BE STRONG AND CALL FOR HELP! MAKE GOD STAND BY YOUR SIDE AND GUIDE YOU THROUGH THIS HELL!

Several years ago, I had to do a medical detox in order to come off of all of the opiates and things that I was taking. Below are the things that the hospital had done for me, and suggested that I do once I got home.
1. One of the biggest concerns with Opiate withdraw is seizures. Therefore, move any furniture away from your bed, and don’t take a bath, just shower.
2. Stay away from caffeine (drinks and chocolate). Caffeine makes detoxing from Opiates more difficult.
3. Take allot of showers, hot or cold, it doesn’t matter. Plus, you will smell better, especially after sweating so much.
4. You need to try and stay busy. You are not going to feel like it, but force yourself to exercise, play games, talk with friends, go to church, or do anything, as long as you stay busy.
5. In regards to the withdraw symptoms, you just have to treat them. For example:
A. For diarrhea, take Amodium AD or something.
B. For Nausea, take Pepto or something like it.
C. For the aches and pains, take Aleeve or something like it.
D. Many people have described withdraw as the “Flu times 10”; therefore, I recommend something like Thera Flu in the capsule / pill form. It really does help.
E. For the sweating, you need to take an anti-histamine such as Benadrel or Sudifed. If needed, your doctor can prescribe you something like Vistaril (Hydroxyzine as a generic).
The only other thing that the hospital did for me was that they had given me some high-blood pressure medicine. Although my blood pressure was just fine, they had given it to me because it some how lesses the effects of withdraw. Now the physical withdraw only lasts for 3 to 5 days, but if you are still experiencing some of the symptoms, then just continue to treat them. Good luck,

I had ACL surgery and was prescribed both Oxycodone 5's and Percocet. At the max, I was taking 16 doses a day or roughly 80mg's. As soon as I started to taper the amount I was taking, the wd's started. When I finally got down to 1 every 7-8 hours, it was like starting all over. I had the typical wd's with bad shakes and all my old injuries crying out in pain. The whole physical part of the process took 5 days after the last dose of oxy. Some people will probably disagree with my recipe for easing off oxys, but it helped me.
Lots of water
Ice cream bars
Marijuana-a single hit every 4-5 hours
Red wine, intermittently- helped the shaking and nervous legs. I had a total of 3 glasses on the worst day.
Vicodin-1-2 at bedtime. It didn't give me the severe Wd's the Oxys did and helped me taper. I made sure to wait 8 hours after drinking alcohol because of the tylenol in the vicodin.
Melatonin- helped me get to sleep
Video games and movies
Now I'm off the Oxy's and I'm feeling much better, and no, I'm not getting drunk and stoned every minute of the day. I'm just happy to be through that one.
Good Luck! You can get off them too.

Good luck and God speed.I have been on this junk for 4 years and now am tapering down.My stomach is already feeling much better.I went from 80+ mg. a day to now 30mg. per day.I will keep going until I get to at least 15 mg. per-day. I have been cutting it in half every 3 days and I am winning!! but I feel shaky and sick.Good luck to all of us.For me it is a matter of finances and need to go back to work.In Electrical construction you can not work sick because you have to compete with 30 y.o. super hero's.I am 56 and a disabled vet.
