... appointment with the pain doctor already scheduled but in the meantime I was wondering if it would be a problem for me to take 4 or 6 at a time? I have got to get relief. The shot of toradol and decadron i got at the ER did little to touch this pain. Brought me down from a 10 to an 8, maybe!

I would try taking 2, then 3 and see what that does or maybe take 2 every three hours rather than every 4-6 hrs. I completely understand where you're coming from. As a healthcare professional myself, I wouldn't try any more than 3 in one sitting, because the tylenol in them can cause severe liver damage. When you do see the pain management doc, talk to him about putting you on something that has no tylenol in it and further discuss your options. If anything, take the Tylenol 3's with a couple 200mg Ibprufen and see how that works.
I truly hope this helps and good luck!!

Hey arewethereyet,
The tylenol in tylenol 3 is one limiting factor. The maximum tylenol to take at one time is 1000mg and 4000mg in 24 hours. Each pill of tylenol 3 contains 300mgs tylenol so the maximum you should take is 3 at any one time. Overdosing on the tylenol is damaging to the liver and kidneys.
The maximum recommended dose of codeine is 60mgs. Each tylenol 3 contain 30mgs of codeine. So I don't recommend taking more than 2 pills at one time.
I know you are in pain, but can't recommend you take more than 2 pills at one time. Can you try some other methods of pain relief such as applying heat or ice. I know this is minimal but might help.
Best wishes,
Laurie

I know pain is pain but taking more than 2 tablets could be extremley dangerous, if you cannot tolerate the pain you might ask the Dr. if you could take 2 every 3 hours but NOT without talking to the doctor, Laurie is trying to be concerned about your liver also if you happen to get too much codeine after a shot of Toradol it might accidentally slow your respirations down, Far better to telephone a doctor because lets just say if you started using the Tylenol #3 like that you'd run through them like crazy, also you might try and push your appointment UP with your Pain doctor, Just want you to be safe if the pain is that bad once you use two Tylenol #3 (2) at a time you will build up a level in your blood, be sure and keep track of how much you're using, If it's so intollerable it would be far better to return to the emergency room than to do something that is not prescribed to take a big dose like that! Please try and understand we want the best for you!
Caringson, just what I'm reading I think you are right. Von
This is the first prescription for pain medication that I have had written since September 2010. I have never bought pills on the street. This is the first episode of acute lumbar back pain that I have had in 2 1/2-3 years. Until this point my pain has been controlled with the Lyrica or Neurontin, Flexiril or Valium and Ibuprofen or Naproxen. I stay as far away from ER's and urgent care as much as possible. I admit I have a problem with pills, I am not sure when it started, but it's there. I have been through treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, Bulemia, and Substance abuse. If the pills and drugs aren't accessable to me, I won't take them, simple as that. I am not "drug seeking".
I just don't consider what I have done that much of a problem, and I am not sure why that is, since everyone else does seem to think it is a problem.
Anyways thank you guys. I appreciate you being real with me.

You have YOUR tramadol, see you are counting the days do you for one minute think if the pain specialist has a brain in his head IF by some SAD reason he doesn't see RED once he see's you and hears your story then I can truthfully say he too has a problem, but you see the thought of loosing a vital organ such as a liver dosen't seem to phase you, You live from one pill to another, You need to lay out in the SUV because your body hurts and your brain and other organs crave OPIATES, it is possible to treat people who are sneeky and don't play by the rules, they have physicians who treat both opiate dependent and people who suffer pain as well, I am on here telling you this because things are only going to get worse, Have you ever wondered what you'll do when NO ONE will prescribe, I had a mail carrier addicted who came to my door at 3 a.m.
I am starting a prednisone 10 mg pack and I just took my first dose, 20 mg. I feel horrible. I am not used to taking prednisone. I was taking 5mg pack when I had the icky Ultram issue, which I subsequently had without the prednisone and was able to directly link to the Nuvigil. Anyways, Am I supposed to feel this crappy? I had gastric bypass surgery in 2006 and my gallbladder out in 2008. I have GERD but I take Dexilant for it. I am telling you this because the crummy feeling is similar to the reflux feeling I get if I miss my Dexilant or if I eat something I shouldn't and don't purge. My GP also told me the max dose on the Flexiril was 10 mg TID. I swear I have been prescribed I higher dose than that before, am I thinking of something else? Valium maybe?
YOU are still at it THINK serequel overdose discusses with therapist or psy it makes me wonder (you spend time reading this information) but I am not convinced you think about doing the right thing, you even discuss taking more Flexeril than you ought to be able to, these doc's are either disgusted and just let you call the shots or they are slow at learning that you follow whatever you think is best, Again I am not trying to be mean rude or even disgusted, it's downright the facts and I care and don't want to see you harm yourself, I hope the cortisone helps you but in the descriptions of meds you have taken whether it be by doctors orders or by doing it your way you are fortunate that anything helps you, One day it's going to catch up with you and you know that is sad because you are an individual that is worth far more than you think, otherwise why would you use things like weed and and many other things mentioned on here.

I don't mean to be UnKIND BUT if you decide to take this into your own hands then your pain doctor will get the idea that you do this and he won't be able to trust you to follow his orders, If you can't take the pain at least get authorization from the doctors, don't start of by misleading the doctors to think you won't comply with their orders. I Live with Chronic Pain but Pain doctors just won't tolerate you not following orders!
Thanks you guys. One thing I always am with doctors is honest. There is really no point in not being honest. Typically in the past the drugs I have abused have not been pain medications, it has been amphetamine and marjuana and caffeine pills. I did abuse some Ultram last Tuesday but I haven't since because it left me feeling horrible. I have not taken any more T3's. I have always written down what i have taken, how much, and when, even when i was using street drugs, believe it or not, because i learned from overdosing and winding up in ER that it was very easy for me to lose track of how much I was taking. I took 2 of the T3's two hours ago. Someone had said to try taking 200 mg ibuprofen with it? I thought combining NSAIDS was a BIG nono, like causing ulcers??? Anyways I have been parked on the sofa with a heating pad since I have been home.

Any movement, even walking, is so painful, and when I first move after sitting for 30 minutes or so there is this disconcerting crunching/popping feeling that I have had before after my last bad accident about 5 years ago. Anyways... OK Thanks for the info... I hadn't smoked weed since last July, but last night a friend invited me over, she had found some that was 6 months old, she can't get any more, so we smoked it together. It wasn't much and honestly I barely got a buzz, but it made me comfortable enough to get up and do some very gentle stretching. Back when I was smoking weed every day my back felt so much better, Ugh...
the Ibuprofen and the tylenol and the codeine might just start you vomiting and it can cause problems with the stomach and even bleeding, so I just think I'd keep it like you are doing but please do Do it without maybe getting yourself into a bigger mess than you are in. I hate to see (or be) in horrific pain believe me I know what it's like I've had Polio
You can take ibuprofen with Tylenol. Acetaminophen (active ingredient in Tylenol) is not an NSAID. It has no anti-inflammatory properties. It is an analgesic and antipyretic (means works for fever). Toradol is an anti-inflammatory but if you had the shot more than 24 hours ago you should be ok to take ibuprofen now. You might call your Dr to see if he will call in a muscle relaxant. It could very well be muscle spasm causing your pain. If he wont call in a muscle relaxant you might want to try ice rather than heat. Ice will help with the inflammation or you can alternate ice and heat. Ice for inflammation, heat to relax muscles. Be sure you keep the ice or heat on no longer than 20 minutes at a time and keep it off the rest of the hour. You dont want to burn yourself and you can injure the skin with both the ice and the heat. As the other posters have said, you dont want to take any more than 2 T3's at a time.

If all else fails to give relief then you should go on back to the ER or Urgent Care. UC is less expensive if you have one nearby to utilize and they can do the same as ER for back pain probably with less wait time for you as well.
Thanks again you guys. Part of my regularly prescribed meds is 100 mg Lyrica three times a day and 10 mg Flexaril twice a day. Since my back has been bad I have been taking 20 mg Flexaril twice a day as the prescribing Dr. said I could do that when it got bad. The ER doc told me I could even do that three times a day and be fine. I used to take 800 mg Neurontin 3 times a day. That worked much better than the Lyrica, but it made me high as a kite and I couldn't work in surgery while I was on it so I switched to Lyrica. I haven't worked full time since July 2009, when I tried to committ suicide the first time (first time in my ADULT life) by overdose... so when I go back to the pain guy I am going to ask to go back on Neurontin again. The Tens unit (Tims? Tems?) I rented back after the last really bad injury helped while I was using it and effects lasted about 30 minutes after I used it. The once and only time I had my back injected I swear to you it didn't do a damn thing to help me, in fact the pressure seemed to only make me feel worse.
I used to take my Flexeril 3 x day back when i took it. It IS a TENS unit by the way. Back pain stinks! I deal with it every day of my life too. I have been going through a bad flare the last couple of weeks myself! It is difficult when you cant find any relief and the idea of taking more medicine than you should is very seductive!! That is a road that leads to too many problems so it is best not traveled, no?
I am sure I sound whiny, I hate it, I don't mean to. I have had two rotator cuff repairs on my right shoulder for a horseback riding injury. the first repair lasted 5 years I hope the second repair last a lot longer than that! Then when I fell off my horse in 2005 I started with the really bad issues in my back and hips, in 2009 my horse got panicked in thick woods and reared up and pinned me up against a tree between his body and the saddle and the tree, then a month later at some point when I OD I fell all the way down the stairs, where my husband found me. I seriously blame all my back problems on all the hard physical labor I did when I was young. I worked as a groom and exercise rider for a 3-day eventing barn for over a year. It was wonderful work, but it meant 10-12 hour days full of 50 lb.

sacks of feed, even heavier bales of hay, mucking out stalls, and having 1300 lb horses pull me all over the place!!! I wish I hadn't treated my body so harshly when I was younger, but I didn't know any better LOL but I bet we can all say that :)
I do have to ask, is it like absolutely positively I am going to cause some damage to my liver if I take like 8 of these T3's spread out over, say, a 10 hour period? I am just wondering just how risky this is. I know I am better not to push my luck, just wondering what the odds are really, but I guess I probably shouldnt be asking that in a forum where you are supposed to try to help keep people safe... I would like to know though... please...
the rule is no more than 4000mg of acetaminophen (which you know is tylenol) I think tylenol #3 contains 325mgmg per tablet I didn't ask my doctor about the limit of ibuprofen (Please double check this with a doctor) I think I was put on 3- ibuprofen every 8 hours? I know you are not suppose to take more than 3200mg on Rx strength, and they warned me it's better if possible to take the least quanity of Ibuprofen with the other because of adverse problems, No you are not whinning you're just in pain I fell on Ice last winter and broke some things thought the pain would nearly kill me, I just want to be safe and have you as safe as you can be, I know for sure about tylenol limits but am just a tad rusty on Ibuprofen, better for me to be honest! I wish you pain relief and safety together, if you need more assistance please feel free to ask, someone is always willing to try and help, Dzoobaby is also very knowledgable.
OK Let me start by saying I know I am stupid. Over the last 10 hours I have taken my 11 remaining T3's along with 40 mg flexiril, 200 mg lyrica, 300 mg seraquel, virstaryl, 100 mg topamax. Partly because I am in pain, partly because I am an addict, but mostly because I am very depressed. I am not trying to kill myself, just escape, and if I hurt myself in the process, oh well. The only reason I am able to type right now is because I just took the last 3 pills, before now the last time I took two pills was 2 hours and 45 minutes ago. At that time my vision was so blurred I could not see the computer screen or type, I could not watch tv. I just laid on the soft and shut my eyes and pretended to be asleep so my husband wouldn't be suspicious. I know I need help. I do still have suicidal thoughts. July 25th will be the 2 year "anniversary" of my first 100% sincere and serious overdose when I tried to kill myself.

I remember waking up in ICU 4 or 5 days later in bits and pieces here and there and being so, so angry and let down that I hadn't succeeded. That was the worst feeling in the world. Anyways yes I am getting help. No I am not suicidal right now. Now what am I going to do for my back pain tomorrow??? I hope I can call the ER and get them to phone me in a refill... I do have a 9 AM appointment with my PCP Monday morning to get the results of my CT so maybe they will give me a refill because of that. Anyways ok. Thanks for listening. Or reading. Whatever. Thanks.
