Once you have taken all 21 active pills correctly, you will not need a back up method in order to prevent pregnancy, even while on the sugar/inactive pills. The fact you took some a few hours late may slightly increase the chance of pregnancy occurring, but usually just produces break thru bleeding. I know most drs say you are safe after one week of the active pills, if you are really worried and truly want to make absolutely sure you are safe, wait until you take all 21 active pills. This is your first pack, when you take the inactive, you may not start your cycle until you have taken several of the inactive, your period might be significantly lighter or you could skip it and still not be pregnant. If you are in doubt and worried when/if you skip your period, take a home pregnancy test or have your dr run a pregnancy test. Make sure you take your second pack on time, as in the day after your last inactive.
