My doctor tapered me off opana ER 20 and 10 IR. He used some ER 15 I already had, to taper me off and I got the chills/sweats, nausea, diarrhea... but the worst is a nasty taste in my mouth. It is the worst!!! I have to have mints in my mouth all the and can only drink "strong" drinks (ie. high in syrup - Sunkist), and even that doesn't work most of the time. Actually, it has been going on for a long time, ever since the doctor has determined it isn't really helping me because I have built up a tolerance and I have been taking less. I didn't know what it was then. Now the 'taste' is interferring my eating/drinking. HELP!!!

It sounds like he's withdrawing you too fast. Maybe he can slow up. Sometimes it helps to switch to a different opiate if he intends to take you off all opiates. There are also a few drugs that make the wds milder. Many Doc's don't know about these, so ask for them. Clonidine, Baclofen, Zofran, and Trazodone. I'm sorry that I don't have any suggestions for the bad taste thing.

Thank you for your comment. I came to the same realization about withdrawing me too fast. On Monday he did put me on 10 mg percocet - 6 pills only. I started having weird chest 'pains/pressure' today, but they are now gone. I happen to be on baclofen as an abortive when I get a migraine. I was just switched to lunesta from trazadone as it wasn't helping me sleep. I called my migraine doctor, who put me on lunesta, and she suggested I stop taking it after I read that it could be the cause of the nasty taste. I have so many doctors that it is so hard to figure out which causes what. The withdrawal is the worst... I took some norco and feel a little better, but I know my back doctor (the one who is taking care of my pain) will not be happy with me. Oy!
The first thing I always wonder when I read a question like yours is whether or not you can stay without opioid pain meds? If you can the it's worth it to go through the misery of the detox procedure. If you can't then it's better if they the Doc just switches you to whatever new med he wants to try you on. Although some times if they keep you off or almost off everything your tolerance goes down. That works on some people and not others. I seem to be one of the people it doesn't work on.
If Baclofen stops working Methocarbamol is a similar drug that often works well too. Just a thought.
