Nizatidine is used to treat and prevent ulcers. It is also used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and to treat and maintain healing of erosive esophagitis.
It works be blocking histamine receptor in stomach which results in reduced production of gastric acid.
The use of nizatidine on a regular basis for 4 to 6 weeks will usually determine its effectiveness in healing an ulcer. Continual use for 6 to 12 weeks is needed to heal the esophagus in GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). Long-term use of months to years is generally safe but does require periodic medical evaluation.
