... on nerve pain

Hi olivia - I was recently prescribed Elavil otherwise known as Amitriptyline (generic). There are a lot of people who are prescribed this med for nerve pain. I now take just 25mg and was initially started on 10mg... then 20mg. and finally the 25mg. It can make you pretty tired so it is recommended to be taken in the evening or whenever bedtime is for that person. Without knowing what other diagnoses you might have it is hard to just give out the name of meds that work for nerve pain or other procedures that are used to block nerve pain. You didn't mention what caused the nerve issue. That would be helpful. I get nerve blocks in my back, for instance. An anesthesiologist does that. The effects can be longer lasting than just taking meds, for instance. I hope you will share more about what is going with you so we can respond with more informed feedback. In the meantime, I hope this has helped you some.

Have you ever heard of Neurontin (Gabapentin is the generic name) ? It is Not a Opiate medication it is for nerve pain specifically & it does have some side effects as any drug does. But I have been on it for about 15 yrs with no side effects. It is a drug that works for several conditions. I take it for my Fibromyalgia & nerve pain & Neuropathy & Hot flashes due to menopause.
The other medication that works well is Lyrica it is approved for Fibromyalgia ( which is nerve pain ).
The main side effect that people have is that some people retain water & have swelling.
I also take Lyrica & once the dr. started increasing the dosage high I started getting swelling. But once I went down to a lower dosage the swelling went away & it Really helps alot...
Also have you been put on Opiates before & have they not worked?
I take Opiates for Chronic pain & it really helps.
Anyways hopefully I was able to give you some options to look at. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

as everyones else has said you didn't specify what type of nerve pain and did you try the opiates or where you told they just don't work?
i take opiates for nerve pain and they help me. no they do not take away the pain but they make me functionable and i can tolerate the pain i do have with them. without them i couldn't tolerate the nerve pain i am in. so ether you have not tried them and your dr is telling you that they do not work for nerve pain which i no in alot of cases they do that becasue they just don't want to prescribe them.but maybe you have and they don't work so then the question becomes what have you tried? knowing what the pain is from would be very helpful to everyone answering this question for you first of all and if you have tried any opiates also and what kind. add some info and yo'lkl get alot better answers to help you out.

First, I would wonder who told you opiate meds DON'T help with nerve pain simply, because they do along with Neurontin or generic gabapentin for me.
Secondly, are you with a pain management physician to manage your pain issues? I have found that primary care docs don't like to write for narcotics. It you aren't seeing a PM doc, I would suggest you get a referral to the closest pain doc.
Since you didn't give the cause or duration of your pain, it's hard to give you more of an answer. If any of us responding to your answer came close, that's a good thing. If not, ask a more specific question. We will give it our best to answer appropriately.
Peace and to more less painful days,
