He slept maybe 4 hours on Friday night and not one minute last night. He is fine during the day yet says he feels weird at night and belches alot(weird I know)... will this go away? He is 11 and weighs about 72 lbs. I feel like its not working because MAYBE he isn't ADHD? I have no idea but this is nuts and we are exhausted. Please help!
My son who is 11 just started on Friday and cant sleep:(?

Hey bstrong,
I'm assuming we are talking about the medication Vyvanse. Trouble sleeping is a common side effect of this medication. You didn't mention what dose he is taking. The usual initial dose is 30mg and should be taken first thing in the morning. If the insomnia occurs again tonight I would give the doctor a call tomorrow and let him/her know.
Best wishes,
Laurie
thanks for the response. I actually did give him Melatonin last night and it didn't do anything... I had read that it would help yesterday on another board but we had no luck:(We are calling his Dr. tomorrow and I am so glad there is this board because this is all so new and scary. I am a single mom so he is at his dads tonight and his dad was shocked when I told him he didn't sleep at all this weekend. Its crazy to see my son acting totally fine and having no sleep at all. Thanks again!
Your'e welcome anytime.

My son had a lot of trouble sleeping when he got to higher doses of Concerta and as Von said the Dr put him first on Clonidine 0.1mg. He now takes 0.2mg as he has gotten older. He falls asleep within 30 minutes to an hour after taking it and even after 8 years, it still works well for him. It helps them to come down off the stimulant they take during the day. His Dr said we could try Benedryl too if we wanted to but the Clonidine seems to work better for him. He tends to have nightmares when he takes Benedryl. Does the medication seem to be helping his symptoms during the day? I knew within hours of giving my son the Concerta that it works. He was so much better on the medications. He was able to be still and listen to instructions, he fought less with his brother. There were just so many changes for the better! I could always tell if he forgot his meds. Ask his Dr about the Clonidine. It really helps.
Also I want to add that sometimes their sleep patterns do adjust to the medications as they get used to it. We never tried anything other than Concerta because it worked well right away. It does affect his appetite and I used to give him high protein supplement shakes at bedtime as a snack to give him good calories. He liked the Equate (Walmart brand) equivalent to Ensure. He likes the chocolate and Strawberry flavors best. they helped him to gain some much needed weight. We do take him off the meds in the summer now so he does gain "catch up" weight in the summers and I hold the meds on the weekends now as well. We were finally able to do this in the last few years. I give him the choice now of whether or not he chooses to continue the medication and so far he has chosen to continue because he takes difficult classes and needs the help concentrating.
Dzoo, you are great with your answers, you go into alot of the detail needed. Some and most time I do not go into the details of it and maybe I should. i think people on here forget I was a Ped Nurse for 25yrs and most of our kids were ADHD. So I feel like my answers get over looked or just plain ignoried. I know you don't feel that way from our conversations. Von

Hey bstrong,
You are not a bad parent. This is a trail and error sort of deal. Mary (below) had a good suggestion as DzooBaby is a good person to talk to. You can search her through your Friends page. Friend her and I'm sure she will talk to you, she has more experience with this then I do. Otherwise, speak with the doctor tomorrow. He will know the best avenue to take.
thanks so much. How do I friend someone?
As Laurie said these are ommon side effects. The Ped doc I worked for would put the kids on clonidine 0.1 to sleep. I woulds suggest you call your doc or ped and tell him what is going on.
Hello Laurie my friend (can I interupt) don't mean to be rude. Dzoobaby works (at home) through the week (you may know this) and is not usually available until weekdays (like tomorrow) as you said she is an excellent mother and has had sons with these problems and I am sure she would be more than happy to help in any way she could Caringsonbj (Billy)
Laurie (it's Billy) sorry to interrupt Please note and read my note about Dzoobaby below, about her sons having this type problem and as I said below she works at home through the week and usually isn't available through the weekend but you can contact her tomorrow..PS she is definitely not a bad parent!
No problemo Billy!!
Hey bstrong,
Just click on someone's avatar and it will give you the option to make them a friend. To find DzooBaby click on your Friend's link (upper right) and scroll down to the search window, type in the name of the person and then it will give you the prompt to friend them, once she friends you back you can talk by private messaging.
Laurie
thanks everyone:)
Vyvanse is a CNS (central nervous system stimulant) so insomnia is a side effect. I'm on 70mg of vyvanse right now and my dr. prescribed me clonIDINE for stimulant associated insomnia. No, it doesn't go away. Strattera at the right (sufficient) dose is a non-stimulant adhd med that works very well for some. i also used to be on it. vyvanse has similar side effects of ritalin, adderall, focalin... strattera is a great option. Talk to your dr. or get on a sleeping med--those are probably your only 2 options... also, it is possible that your son is not adhd. stimulants are very common medicines of abuse (sold on the streets, taking excessive amounts of the drug, etc) just be aware. hope this is helpful!
