Adderall XR (amphetamine-dextroamphetamine extended release) is a prescription medication that is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Because it is an amphetamine and is commonly abused, there are special rules for prescribing it, yes this med is addictive.
ADHD and Children
In one study, children with ADHD who took Adderall XR had significant improvements in behavior compared to children who did not take it. These behavior improvements were reported by teachers, who noticed behavior improvements throughout the day (morning and afternoon) in children who were taking Adderall XR.
The most common side effects of Adderall XR include: Loss of appetite; Dry mouth; Difficulty sleeping (insomnia); Headache; Abdominal pain (or stomach pain); Weight loss.

I felt the same way when I faced the decision to put my then 7 y/o son on Concerta which is a stimulant ADD/ADHD med like Adderall XR. It was one of the best things I could have done. I wished I would have done it a few years earlier. It made such a huge difference in not only my son, but our whole family dynamics. There was much less reprimanding, much less anger, my two sons even fought less between themselves. We werent constantly harping on my son to do the things he needed to do because he could now follow through with tasks. He went from almost being kicked out of school to being the Student of the Month! His grades got much, much better. Truly, it was the best thing I could have done. As far as addiction? My son began fighting me about taking it around age 15. He is 17 now and he has stopped the medicine completely and has no cravings or problems in not taking it. He has learned to cope better with his attention deficit. He still has some difficulty concentrating sometimes and can be impulsive but he has gotten better at controlling this.
