I wish I could answer your question. My back trouble was degenerative disc disease. L4 and L5. They say I will eventually blow out more disc if i am not careful. I had the injections they helped for maybe a week. I also had two invasive back surgeries. I am 54 yrs old and now lots of arthritis has set in. I just had my right thumb reconstructed in April and still not over that. I wish u luck and hope someone out there can help. I take methadone for chronic pain. I am trying to cut back on that too. Down to 30mg. a day. But today is my first day of that low dose. Wish me luck...Kim
Hi harleyhoney,
I was just recently diagnosed with degenerative disc disorder at L2-3 and L5-S1 and I'm awaiting my MRI. I too, have nerve involvement in my sciatic. My pain was so bad it hurt to breath. my doc put me on Fentanyl Transdermal patch 50mcg/hour along with percocet 5's for break through pain. The patch has given me so much relief from the pain. I still have episodes where the pain is a 20 on a 1-10 scale, but thats usually after I've been on my feet to long. I'd definitely suggest this patch to your doctor. The medication is timed released and each patch lasts three days. Now, today I put a new patch on and it'd only been two days. I'm calling the doc tomorrow to have my dose increased. Each person is different, but I know that this patch gave me relief from some of the nerve involvement. Fentanyl is the strongest pain med available. Stronger than morophine, so it's worth a try in asking your doc about it. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
The injection may actually help quite a bit. Is this mass scar tissue?? Are you keeping active as this is really important especially when you have a nerve impingement. 30 mgs a day of MS Contin is not a lot of pain killing what you need to do is see a pain specialist...Good luck...Dave
hi hon,
So sorry to hear you are going through all of this. You sound like me. i was on them same medications about 4 years ago then finally switched to Methadone for pain and to be honest it gave me back a life. I know everyone is different and reacts different to drugs but thats how i started feeling better. I was on everything before Methadone and I swear it improved my pain level by 50-80%. it varies of course day to day. Im not on a high dose either .. just 60mg. I do take break thru meds also.. Roxicodone 30mg 3x per day. I have also been on this same dose of medication for 18months and its only now i feel i need a slight increase. before that I was on 50mg of methadone and break thru meds for 17 months. So you see not alot of adjusting at all. Anyhow as far as the injections.. I dont think it would hurt to try them at all. I have heard wonders and have Seen wonders by those injections. Due to the Fact that I have direct bone pain from a failed back surgery injections wont help me much but if i felt they would I would get them. You have nothing to lose by trying it, Who knows it may be the one thing you needed all along!. i wish you well and hope you will keep us posted with how you are doing. I know how you feel because I still live this everyday . One more thing.. Methadone gave me back the ability to be more active and i have been and trust me that helps soo much... Take care.. snakey
