by precription. I am terribly worried about the dosage and the long term affects this may have. From the information on the web I have found no other persons recieving this amount or even close to it. Can someone please provide me with information with how much is too much when it comes to MS Contin?
My mother has been prescribed MS Contin. She is recieving 740 tablets at 60 mg. every 2 weeks?

Also, her General Practitioner (family doctor) was the one who prescribed it. At this dosage should a pain management Doctor be monitoring it? She has been taking these pills for approx. 6 years.

Thank you to everyone who has responded to my question. I will try to explain more here to clear up the confusion. My mom was in a very serious car crash 25 years ago and she suffered a crushed hip. The reason for this comming to my awarness about the pills is she is in the hospital in a diffrent city having her hip replaced for the 7th time. And the doctors questioned the amount and were stunned when she gave them the pill bottle with the precription on it. This is when I discovered how much she is taking. We live in Canada and do not have the DEA and I am not sure who or where I should report this too. I am very worried that her family doctor is trying to kill her with these pills because they do not get along. In Ontario, Canada once you have a family doctor you cannot change because of the doctor shortage. I don't know what to do. The hospital where she is having the surgery is not giving her these pills now because she is on IV drugs for pain with the surgery. But when she comes home I do not want her taking these pills especially at this dosage. She has medical coverage for the pills but it dose cost her a percentage of the total amount. So I question all the money it has cost her when it possibly could have been much less if she doesn't need this amount. I have always questioned why she has to go every 2 weeks to pick up her precription and she always told me beacuse of the amount she is given. Can anyone anser what I can do in Canada regarding having an investigation into the family doctor or if this is even possible.

Are you absolutely sure it's 740-60 mg.tabs every 2 wks!!! That just sounds impossible,I don't know a pharmacy that would be handing 1,480 tabs@month over to her?Call or visit the pharmacy, and call her Dr.He doesn't have to talk to you,as it is privileged info, but tell him you are simply worried sick about your mom!Hopefully one of the 'regulars' who answer questions on this site will help you as my knowledge is negligible.Good luck, and please let us know what happens?God bless... 50 pills per day of Morphine? There has got to be a mistake. Please recheck the numbers. The pharmacy would never dispense that amount of medication. You mom should be under the care of a pain specialist. Oh boy, do I wish you good luck. Get on this situation right away!
What is your moms condition that requires such strong meds? Not being nosy, just trying to help
Her doctor is irresponsible! 6 years and the only thing he does is increase the number of pills?? Get her away from that doctor and in to a pain clinic or specialist. He should be arrested in my opinion. Your mom is definitely addicted by now. She needs to find a medication that works for her and will not cause withdrawl symptoms. Oh does your story make me upset! I am sorry but I wish I had your moms doctors number and the pharmacists number!
That's what I was thinking Pete... what the hell? 50 pills a day?
51 pills a day? lier lier pants on fire...

If this question is a joke... what a sick motherfucker
I don't know Pete, the question sounds serious... now I'm confused.
Just don't hurt yourself Pete!

At the very least I am sure Canada has some type of Medical review Board? Make a complaint against the doctor with the police. Certainly the hospital (because they were so shocked) may be able to do something about this doctor and what he is doing. Or change her meds. You could also take the drugs from her. Ask a professional (while you're there in the hospital) the safest way to taper her down on these meds. Do whatever you need to do to get this doctor out of her life. There has to be some sort of quality controls in place in Canada. Wow, what a dilemma! If she has to stay with this doctor, never let her go alone! Go with her and YOU control the meds.
I don't know how it is in Canada, but in the u.s. unless your mother has been declared incompetent by you or someone else, she can refuse to let you attend the Dr. appts, and you can be prosecuted for theft if you take any of her meds away from her. It's stupid, and it sucks but those are our archaic laws.I'm still having a difficult time believing she's taking all those meds, she sure is tough, and certainly built up an astronomical tolerance!Talk to the surgeon and tell him everything you've told us,it's the perfect time to try to convince your mom to talk all this over with him as well.Once she's home and back in the 'clutches' of her m.d you'll be right back where you started. Also are you close to your priest or preacher?Have you tried talking to him?Or the priest at the hospital may be able to assist you? Did you talk to the pharmacist?Oftentimes they're as knowledgeable(sometimes more so!)as the Dr.
Di... the laws in Canada ARE very different. My husband comes to the dr. with me all the time! I can't drive but, that's besides the point. It won't help the questioner hearing about laws here, when he's there. My only point was to tell him to try whatever means possible (Canadian law) to get his moms' meds under control. It's a terrible situation. So much so that he chose to do the research and come here for help. Please don't let my comment offend you. I have a lot of respect for you and the answers you have posted. You have helped many people, including me.
