No, normally imdur would not be used to treat high blood pressure. Generally, it is used to treat angina, or chest pain. Angina is it's only indication. However, it can cause blood pressure to drop, but I still think it is a strange use. There are probably better choices for high blood pressure.

If I take the imdur 30mg daily for high blood pressure with no history of chest pains could it lead to more harm than good in the long run?
Well, "harm" I think would be subjective at this point. It has side effects, but all medicine does. I don't see it making things worse, but I don't see it helping significantly. Plus, I would think it would kind of be sporadic in how it works. Imdur only works 12 hours from the time you take it. So usually, you would take it in the morning, it would work during the day then at night you 12 hours off of it (which is necessary for the drug to work).
I have to ask a few questions. Have you used any other blood pressure medicine before? How high is your blood pressure? Do you have any other conditions at all? Is this for a long term treatment or only short term?
