That's a tough one to answer... Lortab is an opiate, Klonopin is a benzodiazepine, and No-Doz is caffeine (stimulant), both of his drugs of choice were cns depressants, so it would appear he prefers downers, therefore caffeine is unlikely to trigger a craving but it's fairly common for recovering addicts to switch addictions because they are really addicted to altering reality more than the chemicals themselves. I wouldn't worry too much though as 99% of the people I know in recovery have went hog-wild on caffeine at some point in their recovery. Just tell him to be careful.
