My son has just asked for help for an addiction to Vicodin. He says he's been taking 2 pills a day but we haven't been able to pinpoint how long, but it's probably been more than 6 months. We called his doctor who said he definitely will need to detox and to go the the ER. The only treatment/rehab place in the area seems to be a methadone clinic,and I'd hate to see him go from one addiction to another. What course of detox should be tried first? What sort of detox should we avoid?

methadone is way to strong for this type of problem. If he's been using a weak opiate like vicodin (hydrocodone) for only 6 months and only 2 a day then that's not really an addiction as a kid screwing around with opiates.
That isn't to say that he isn't headed for trouble.
Methadone is for hard long term addicts with opiate tolerances that are through the roof. Most hard addicts wouldn`t even waste their time with hydrocodone. Now what I`m trying to make clear to you hear is that methadone is not the answer here, you could actually raise his tolerance to opiates and if he relapses he`d be taking handfuls of vicodin to get the same effect as he is now.

i understand that you dont want to go from one addiction to another i also am a longtime vicodin user and i tried methadone and i dont recommend it ..but there is a better way its called suboxone.and it does have a very low risk for addiction.but the good thing about this drug is it takes control over your opiate receptors..so it would not matter how many vicodin he took he could not get high anyway go to this website it will give you all the info..turntohelp.com good luck

I agree with Dave. I am on methadone and its no joke. it will take twice as long to detox off of methadone than vicodins. He can easily detox off of vicodin cold turkey. It the mental that will be the problem and thats where the 30-90 day program comes in. Good Luck!
